Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels

Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels was a program idea that originated from the city of Ypsilanti’s Mayor’s Council on Aging. Each delivery includes food for two days.

Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels provides nutritious meals, social contact and other services to the homebound elderly, ill and disabled in eastern Washtenaw County, to enable them to enjoy healthier, safer, and more independent lives. As a result of the Council’s recommendation in the spring of 1973, the City Council agreed to appropriate $8000 to a meal delivery program to begin on July 1, 1973. Pastor

William Bingham, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Ypsilanti and a member of the mayor’s Council on Aging, became the first Executive Director. Volunteers prepared meals in the kitchen of the First Baptist Church. Meal service began on January 14, 1974 to 16 homebound individuals. Today, Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels provides home-delivered meals to more than 200 homebound neighbors. Meals for clients over 60 are prepared at Michigan Medicine and delivered by our Client Care Associates and volunteers each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Clients under 60 receive weekly deliveries of frozen meals. In addition to a hot meal and a cold meal for each day, all YMOW clients receive fresh produce and supplemental food from Food Gatherers, as well as Starbucks and Whole Foods Market. Additionally, clients with kidney and cardiac health issues may receive meals designed for their unique nutritional needs. Other services provided by YMOW include:

support for clients' pets, such as food, cat litter, veterinary care and grooming through the P.A.L.S. (

emergency access to non-food essentials such as cleaning products, toiletries and incontinence products

WEMU 89.1's Caroline MacGregor recently spoke with YMOW CEO Barbara Niess-May about the special challenges faced by older adults when the weather turns warm, and what YMOW and its supporters do to help.

Extreme temperatures are not safe for anyone and even riskier if you are older or have health problems. During the warm weather months, many of our homebound senior neighbors are navigating high summer temperatures alone. Proud to be a Community Health Services of U-M Health grantee! Thank you so much for the support!

For this month, we'd like to highlight one of our grantees: Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels (YMOW)! The staff and volunteers from YMOW bring food, companionship, and peace of mind to hundreds of homebound seniors every weekday. Every knock on the door provides a day’s worth of nutrition, along with a friendly visit and a wellness check for someone who likely lives alone and may not have any other contact with a person that day.

YMOW is so much more than a meal. It’s building community.

We wouldn't have pets to appreciate this week if it wasn't for Kelly Schwartz, who got the program started over 15 years ago! Under Kelly's leadership, we've developed relationships with these community partners who help make pet care affordable for our senior clients. Thanks to them, we delivered 5,856 pounds of pet food to nearly 100 pets, 3,878 pounds of kitty litter, and preventative medicine to our clients' furry friends last year. Thank you!
