New Readability Resource Helps Legal Aid Organizations Improve Accessibility of Public Materials

Washington, D.C. — The Legal Services Corporation’s (LSC) Model Practices & Innovation (MPI) Office of Training and Technical Assistance, in collaboration with the Legal Services Technology National Assistance Project (LSNTAP), has released a new resource to help legal aid organizations improve the clarity and accessibility of their written materials.

The “5 Tips for Resource Readability” infographic and accompanying text version offer practical guidance to ensure that public-facing content is understandable, inclusive, and user-friendly—especially for individuals with disabilities or lower literacy levels. The tips focus on paragraph structure, heading use, appropriate font selection and sizing, and writing at a 6th–8th grade reading level.

“Clear communication is a cornerstone of access to justice,” said B Petersen, Training and Technical Assistance Writer and Content Editor at LSC. “This resource provides simple, actionable steps that legal aid organizations can take to make their materials more accessible to the communities they serve.”

The infographic provides a visually engaging summary of best practices, while the text version ensures compatibility with screen readers and offers a flexible format for printing, training, or internal reference. Together, these formats demonstrate that accessibility and visual design are not mutually exclusive.

“This resource also serves as a model for how infographics can be used effectively and inclusively,” said Shellie Reid, Manager at LSNTAP. “By pairing visual tools with accessible formats, we can reach broader audiences without sacrificing usability.”

Legal aid organizations are encouraged to use and share this resource as part of their ongoing efforts to improve communication, promote equity, and serve clients more effectively.

Managing projects is a balancing act. Project leaders must remain focused on the project goal while continuing to listen to and integrate the voices of both customers and project team members. Juggling these sometimes disparate perspectives, needs, and wants can be challenging.

Join us on May 13 at 1 pm EDT as Jeffrey Russell of Russell Consulting, Inc. leads us through questions such as the following:
-What actions will strengthen your partnership with team members and stakeholders?
-What steps can you take to create greater transparency in your project’s deliverables
and processes?
-How can your project enhance its credibility, respect, and authority with key
stakeholders?

Research shows that reactions to stress, scarcity, and trauma can alter cognitive processes such as memory, attention, planning, and decision making. This impacts how easily people can find information and complete tasks online, so it is critical to consider the impacts of trauma when designing public-facing legal tech tools.

On Tuesday, April 15th at 3 pm EDT, Sarah Mauet and Cayley Balser will delve into designing trauma informed ethical justice tech.

This workshop will:

-explain the practical continuum from trauma-awareness, through trauma-sensitive and trauma-informed, to trauma-responsiveness to help participants understand where they and their organizations currently operate and how to progress towards a trauma-responsive approach to legal services.

-introduce the ethical tech framework that Innovation for Justice uses to design trauma-informed tech tools that are accessible, usable, and useful for real people.

-address the impacts of trauma exposure response and self-care strategies for people working in legal tech design.

Participants will leave this session with a better understanding and an actionable tool kit for implementing trauma-informed research, ethical tech design, and self-care approaches in their own work.

This session is designed for anyone with interest or experience in justice focused UX-design. No previous experience or skills required.
