Maybe the City of Ypsi should bring back and support CoPAC. It's monthly meetings still had more people than what was showing up at the new police commission and better communication with the different neighborhood associations.

The city Human Relations Commission hasn't met in more than a year.

National Coffee with a Cop Day
When: October 2nd at 9:00am
Where: Biggby Coffee
1510 Washtenaw Avenue
Ypsilanti, MI

A cup of coffee is a common bond and an activity usually shared by friends. It is also a way for strangers to come together and get to know each other. In this light the Ypsilanti Police Department is trying to build better relationships with the community that we serve. So what is Coffee with a Cop?

1- It is agenda free. There will be no Power Point presentations, no speeches or specific topics to discuss. Just informal conversation about what matters to the community or anything else that you would like to talk about.

2- There are no barriers. There are no radios or patrol vehicles or calls for service to attend to. It is just a time for the Police Department to be more approachable and have a relaxed conversation with our citizens.

The CWP is an alternative to incarceration program that substitutes community labor, rather than incarceration, for carefully selected offenders. The Work Program provides service to local municipalities and other non-profit organizations throughout Washtenaw County.

From the Ypsilanti Police Department

Many crimes can be prevented by following a few simple steps. The most important is to make sure that you secure your valuables. When you leave your residence to make sure that you close and lock all of your doors and windows. Window screens are easily defeated and provide no protection from someone entering a dwelling. If you have a first-floor window air conditioner make sure that you secure it in place so that it is not easily removed to gain access to your home. Do not leave expensive, easily transportable items near open windows or doors even when you are home. Make sure that your garage is secure, especially if it is attached to your home. Unsecured garages leave your connecting door vulnerable and the burglar out of sight while they work on opening it.

Do not announce on social media when you will be out of town and avoid posting pictures/comments while you are away. Get to know your neighbors and look out for each other. Have a neighbor retrieve your mail while you are gone and make sure that grass gets cut so there will be the appearance that you are still there. Lights are key to keeping a residence safe. Motion sensor lights, porch lights, and garage lights are all good options for making your home a more difficult target. In addition, consider utilizing timers to turn lights on and off while you are out of town to give the appearance that the residence is occupied.

Many of these same concepts go for your vehicle as well. Lock your car and roll up your windows when you park it, even in your driveway. Do not store valuables in your vehicle. If you must leave anything of value in the vehicle put it out of sight. Never leave your keys, wallet or credit cards in your vehicle. If you are parking in a parking lot at night try to park under a light pole.

Many incidents are crimes of opportunity. Take away those opportunities and you will greatly reduce the chances that you will be the victim of a crime. At the Ypsilanti Police Department, we believe that a well informed and engaged community is our best partner. So please if you see anything suspicious in your neighborhood immediately report it to police. Ypsilanti Police Department 734-483-9510 or 911 if it is an emergency.
