For background: The UAW places a high priority on supporting people who run for office, not just at the national level, but at the local level, too. Before endorsing a candidate, UAW members interview each person running. If someone has previously held office, the UAW also considers past actions which were either in support of or had gone against support of unions and workers. I was interviewed when I successfully ran for City Council in Ypsilanti in 2004. The process is not simply a rubber stamp, but involves a committee and a rigorous set of questions. By going through the process, the UAW hopes to improve local, regional, state, and national outcomes for all of us.
