On Wednesday (8/19) morning, we had the honor of furnishing a home for a Marine veteran—a tank driver, to be exact. She was “thankfully,” in her words, never deployed. After months of homelessness, she was finally moving into her own apartment with her cat.

She arrived with an air mattress, a desk, a TV, and a few kitchen basics. When we asked what she wanted for her new home, she sent us the most organized—and wonderfully specific—wish list!

Her style? Dark academia meets gothic. Ebony, burgundy, plum and navy, accented with scarlet, gold or silver, periwinkle and violet.
And we LOVED it!

Velvet, tassels, candlesticks, cathedral-inspired pieces—you name it, we found it. This was such a fun client and such a fun design to create!
When we asked what her favorite piece was, she immediately said the bed. But she also loved a tiny piece of cat art that read, “You can never have too many cats!”

Sometimes the smallest spaces hold the biggest stories.

Our second client on Tuesday (8/18) had a simple request: “I’ll trust you ladies to make it look nice.” He loved traditional style, country themes, puzzles, and little touches that would make his new apartment feel like home.

He also asked for the everyday essentials—cleaning supplies, basic tools, cooking ingredients, and a CD/DVD player because he wasn’t much of an internet guy.
We started with a comfy recliner and built the room around warm colors and traditional pieces. We found country music CDs, a cozy quilt, wildlife décor, country-themed puzzles, and a beautiful horse portrait for the bedroom.

The apartment was much smaller than expected, and with concrete and plaster walls, hanging artwork became a challenge. But we made it work—and our kitchen team worked magic in the tiny kitchen!

When our client walked through the finished space, he kept saying, “Oh wow. This is perfect. This is just what I like.”

He especially loved the horse portrait and shared that he had worked with horses all his life. And he was just as excited about the cleaning and cooking supplies as he was about the furniture.

His caseworker, from SAWC, summed it up perfectly: “It’s so him.” And that’s exactly what we hope every home we create feels like. WELCOME HOME! Shelter Association of Washtenaw County

Tuesday’s (8/18) first client was a soft-spoken 20-year-old, referred to us by MDHHS, who is just beginning to get her life back on track.

She wasn’t quite sure what she needed for her new apartment, but she knew she wanted to keep things warm and neutral with a beige color palette and add some inspirational touches along the way.

We created a cozy living room and even found a way to fit her computer desk into the space—giving her a comfortable place to relax, work and begin this new chapter.

When she walked in, she was thrilled with the colors and the way everything came together. She loved it so much that she hugged every one of us.

Monday’s move was all about creating a first home filled with personality, color and a little sparkle.

Our 19-year-old client was referred to HN2H by Ozone House back in July and had been patiently waiting for her apartment keys. She loves hot pink and purple, contemporary décor, flowers, gardens and Chris Brown. She does eyelashes, loves to cook and bake, enjoys romantic books and UNO, and was especially excited about having a makeup vanity for her lash hobby.

The move was going smoothly…until we realized we had forgotten the TV stand!

A big shout-out to our art department for the Chris Brown artwork and our sewing department for the fabulous red-striped covers on the exterior seating.

Sadly, our client couldn’t make it back for the reveal because she was still at Ozone House. So we left her WELCOME HOME card, closed the door and headed out, hoping she would love her new home.

Then, at 7:00 that evening, came the text we were waiting for: “Omggg yall did a good job I love everything! Thank you soo much!”

And just like that, we knew it was a job well done. WELCOME HOME! Ozone House

For Friday’s (8/14) second move, we had the privilege of leading a very special move for two young women who met at Ozone House, became fast friends, and were now starting a new chapter together in their first apartment.

From our very first conversation, we knew these two had a vision! They loved neutrals, wood, green and orange, with a little whimsy mixed in. And when one said she wasn’t afraid of pattern, we knew exactly what to do!

They also had a cat to accommodate, loved to bake, and hoped for supplies for their art and jewelry-making.

One especially meaningful request was a treasured print created by an artist friend called “Queen in My City.” It was something she had carried with her over the years, and she hoped it could have a special place in her new room.

When they arrived for the reveal, they admitted they were nervous—but that quickly turned into pure joy.

Looking around the living room, one said, “I literally was not expecting any of this!” And when the fully stocked bookshelf was discovered, we heard, “Oh girl, we’re about to have some fun!”

One room was declared, “Perfect. I wouldn’t change a thing,” while the other brought tears of joy when she saw her beloved print beautifully framed and hanging in her new space.

Even the bathroom earned a finger clap of approval! They loved the colors, the added storage, and were so impressed by the artful towel folding that we had to explain how we did it.

After heartfelt hugs, it was time to leave these two delightful friends to enjoy their beautiful new home.

Friday (8/14) morning’s move was all about creating a home where a mom and her two youngest boys could feel comfortable, cared for, and truly at home.

Our client dreamed of a space filled with gray and white, with pops of color throughout—and we brought that vision to life. From a cozy gray couch and dining table for family dinners to a homework space, movies, and plenty of cooking and baking essentials, we tried to think of all the little things that make a house feel like home.

Her two dogs were part of the plan, too, with cozy beds, new food bowls, and a special spot for their food and treats.

The boys love soccer, basketball, and dirt bike racing, so our art and sewing teams helped create bedrooms filled with their favorite things—including a special soccer pillow. Mom’s bedroom was designed just for her, with soft grays, whites, pinks and blues, fresh flowers, and a few special touches. Even the small bathroom got her requested gray and white with a pop of deep red.

And then we learned it was Mom’s birthday week! We tucked a cake, decorations, and some holiday surprises away for her so she could celebrate with her family in her new home.

Mom had to work on move-in day, so we didn’t get to see her family’s faces when they opened the door. But then came her message:
“We are grateful for the help. The boys love their rooms… My older kids are coming over tomorrow and we’re gonna cook dinner and have cake and ice cream you guys left. Thank you so much.”

She even said that one day, when she’s able, she wants to come back and volunteer.
That’s the kind of full-circle moment we love. WELCOME HOME!

Thursday afternoon’s (8/13) move was for a family of four, and their three cats, they were referred to House N2 Home by Alpha House on August 8.

The whole family loves Marvel superheroes! Dad and son chose red and blue, while Mom loves purple and a little sparkle. They hoped for a contemporary space filled with flowers, gardens and cityscapes, plus desks and bookcases for everyone’s interests.

Our storage team went above and beyond to make this home special—from a giant cat tree and Marvel-inspired bathroom touches to books, games, bedding, beautiful flowers, framed artwork and the perfect cat picture. So many volunteers helped clean, select, organize and prepare every detail.

On move-in day, our heavy lifters got everything upstairs while the team transformed each room. The kitchen was organized, the beds were made, the bathroom was refreshed, and even the Big Blue Sofa finally found its home!

When Mom and her son walked in, the reaction said it all. Through tears, Mom said, “You guys do such nice work!” She loved finally having a space—and a desk—of her own. Her son was thrilled with his room and proudly announced, “I have always wanted my own desk!”

Our team spoke with the clients Monday, pulled items Tuesday and Wednesday, and had the truck loaded and ready for an 11 AM move Thursday (8/13). Then, at 9 PM Wednesday night, we got the news that the move would have to be rescheduled for next week.

Not if we could help it! By Thursday morning, our team worked its magic and got the caseworker, apartment management, and client all on the same page. The move was back on!

It truly took a village. Volunteers helped pull, clean, unload, and set up—and the whole thing came together in record time. “Wow, that was the fastest move I’ve ever done!” one volunteer said. Another added, “They don’t mess around!”

Our couple had been living in a tent for the past two years. Thankfully, a nearby friend helped them through tough times, but now they finally have a place of their own.

They had very different decorating requests—she wanted pink, purple, and flowers, while he wanted blue, red, birds, and a little U-M spirit. We also needed everything to be wheelchair and walker-friendly, with low-pile rugs, a shelf for special keepsakes, and recliners.

We couldn’t find two individual recliners, but a double recliner had just come into storage the week before. Perfect timing!

As they walked in, they immediately said, “I like it already! I really like that!” pointing to the TV. Then came, “We love the bedroom! We can’t thank you enough!”

Our second client on Tuesday, 8/11, was a young family referred to us by Alpha House. Mom, Dad, and their three little ones had been living at the shelter and were more than ready for a place to call their own.

The family had received some wonderful baby gear from the shelter, and relatives had provided a few pieces of furniture. Our job was to come in and fill in the rest—creating a warm, comfortable home that felt like theirs.

Mom loved purple and a modern style. Dad loves anime and drawing, while the kids are fans of Pokémon, Spider-Man, and Bluey. We created a cozy family room with soft, easy-to-clean furniture and no sharp corners—perfect for a busy family with little ones.

Mom had mentioned several times that she hoped to have a little table for the kids. With their tiny kitchen, we found the perfect solution: a double drop-leaf table that can tuck snugly against the wall when not in use, along with chairs that stack away easily.

The kids' room became a little play-and-reading haven, complete with a soft, wipeable floor, books, puzzles, and a Bluey dollhouse. Dad was especially excited to see the big Pokémon poster!

And Mom and Dad got a peaceful purple retreat of their own, with plenty of room for all the baby's things. Their newest little one had arrived just five days earlier—three weeks early—so we knew this mama was probably exhausted.

Throughout the move, Mom was quiet and reserved, but she told us she was excited to see how everything came together. Dad was so sweet, even offering to stay and help us with the move.

When they finally walked through their new home, their quiet smiles turned into little squeals of excitement.

“Look! Yes! The kids are going to love this. Y’all are going to make me cry.”

Our first client on Tuesday (8/11) was a mom and her two little ones, referred to us by SOS Community Services. Until now, they had been sleeping in their truck, with their few belongings packed away in bags. She told us she needed everything.

Today, she finally walked through the door of a home of her own.

As she took in each room, she kept saying, “I’m not going to cry. I’m not going to cry. I just love it.” She filmed the apartment as she walked from room to room, amazed by every detail—from the shower curtain and living room chair to the kitchen appliances, furnishings, toys, books and, most importantly, a real bed where she could finally sleep.

Mom chose neutral tones for the living room and bathroom, and black, white and gray for her bedroom. For the kids, she requested pink and yellow and Gabby’s Playhouse for her daughter, and Bluey for her son.

Our art department even framed special Gabby’s Playhouse and Bluey artwork just for them. We added coloring books, Barbies, a Barbie car and house, toys, books and everything Mom requested for the kitchen—including a blender, air fryer, toaster oven and coffee maker. And because she loves live plants, we made sure to add those, too.

She couldn’t stop talking about how much she loved everything and how excited she was for her kids to see their new rooms.

We can’t wait to hear what they think. WELCOME HOME!
