Our Tuesday client (6/16) had only been in his apartment for a couple of weeks, but he was already dreaming about making it feel like home.

A 42-year-old Chicago native, he shares his life with his loyal dog, Luna, and was eagerly preparing for a special summer visit from his daughter and two-year-old grandson. Referred to House N2 Home by Washtenaw County Public Health on June 8, he was excited to finally furnish the apartment he moved into on the first of the month.

His vision was clear: navy blue and silver-gray tones, contemporary décor, a desk, books filled with true crime, mystery, and thrillers, and plenty of nods to his love of classic cars.

When our team arrived, we were greeted by both our client and an enthusiastic Luna. That's when we realized something important—we had no idea there was a dog! While the team got to work unloading and setting up, one of our volunteers made a quick trip back to storage. She returned not only with the fresh and frozen food we had forgotten, but also a surprise package for Luna: a cozy dog bed, treats, toys, and a water bowl.

As the apartment transformed around him, our client did his best to contain Luna's excitement while taking it all in. The once-empty space was becoming a home.

When he finally stepped back to see everything together, he smiled and simply said, “Looks great!”

Sometimes the simplest words say it all. WELCOME HOME!

Our first client of Monday (6/15), referred to us by SOS Community Services, opened the door to a home filled with thoughtful touches created just for her family.

Her pre-teen son loves the color blue and all things sports, so we made sure his corner of the world reflected that passion. A door-mounted basketball hoop, two basketballs, a padded bat, and a stack of sports books were waiting for him to discover.

Her younger son lights up over the color yellow and anything with wheels. We brought in books, toys, and artwork celebrating his love of cars, creating a space that felt uniquely his.

And for Mom, whose favorite color is pink, we added soft touches of it throughout her bedroom. We were also able to provide everything she had hoped for—including outdoor furniture, a microwave, and a TV.

As she walked through her new home, taking it all in, one phrase echoed again and again:
"Oh my gosh."

Those simple words captured the joy, relief, and excitement of a family beginning a new chapter—one where home finally feels like home. WELCOME HOME!

For our fourth move on Friday (6/12), we had a client referred by WCCMH, he knew exactly what made him smile: blue and black, the Detroit Lions, James Patterson novels, a DVD player, and live plants.
We got to work.

Three James Patterson books made their way into the pile. Three movies sat beside a DVD player, ready for quiet evenings at home. We brought not only a live plant, but a pot of flowers too—small reminders that new beginnings can bloom.

A dear friend joined him for the reveal. Three years ago, House N2 Home had furnished her home. As she walked through his apartment, memories of that day came rushing back.

Through tears, she shared that they had been friends for eight years and that he deserved this moment. She was overwhelmed with happiness for him.

He quietly told us that he had been homeless since his mother died in 2014.

As he walked through each room, he didn't say much at first. He simply took it all in, wearing a smile that grew a little wider with every step. He stopped at the kitchen table and told us how much he loved it. But when he stepped into his bedroom, his face completely lit up.

The two Lions plates hanging on the wall and the Lions throw folded across the bed caught his eye immediately. He looked around, overwhelmed, and finally found the words.
"You are amazing," he told us.
Then, with another smile, he added, "It's all awesome."
After a decade on no home, WELCOME HOME!

A third move Friday (6/12) brought us to a mom who has spent the last year facing serious health challenges with remarkable strength. Through it all, her biggest supporter has been right by her side—her teenage son, who will be starting high school this fall and hopes to earn his spot on the football field as a wide receiver. The only thing we couldn't quite understand? His unwavering loyalty to Ohio State. Haha!

Referred to us by SOS, our client dreamed of a home with a modern feel, filled with rich reds and purples. She shared that she hoped to spend more time cooking and baking in this new chapter, so we stocked her kitchen with everything she would need, including a few cookbooks to inspire new traditions and favorite recipes. Thanks to Hope Clinic for providing food for our pantry, we were able to fill her cupboards with food and her freezer was stocked with delicious frozen meals. We even left a homemade lasagna ready for dinner that evening—one less thing to worry about on move-in day.

At the reveal, tears filled her eyes. She expressed her gratitude and told us that we would all be blessed because of the good we were doing for others. It was a reminder that home is more than furniture and full cupboards. It's comfort, dignity, hope, and the chance to begin again.
WELCME HOME!

A special thank you to our volunteers from Old National Bank for helping make this fresh start possible.

Our Friday afternoon move (6/12) had actually been on our calendar since February.
Back then, our client had left the shelter, and his caseworker wasn't sure where he had gone. We worried that the opportunity had slipped away. Then one day, we received a message from him asking if we could still help.

He had been working hard to secure Section 8 housing and wondered if there was still a place for him on our list. The answer was yes.

With the help of his new caseworker, a new referral was completed, and we were able to get him back on the books.

Referred to us by SOS, our client had waited six long months for housing approval. During that time, he couch surfed between friends and relatives, holding onto hope that stability would eventually come.

Move day brought its own challenges. The apartment sat above a commercial building on a busy corner. Thankfully, the moving truck found a spot right out front. An incredible team of volunteers carried every piece of furniture and every box up approximately 20 stairs to the second-floor apartment—with no air conditioning on a warm June day.

The family had shared a few simple wishes. Blue, gray, and neutral tones for the master bedroom, living room, kitchen, and boys' room. Purple and black for the teenager's bedroom. They hoped for an air fryer and crockpot for family meals, several fans to help combat the summer heat, and a small sitting area in the master bedroom.

The eight-year-old son loves football and basketball, and we learned that Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson is his favorite player. We tracked down a Justin Jefferson poster online, and our art team framed it before move day so it would be waiting for him in his new room.

The teenage daughter dreamed of having a desk where she could be creative and artistic. We were able to give her not only a workspace of her own, but art supplies to experiment, imagine, and create.

Our client wasn't able to be there for the reveal. But later that day, this text message arrived:
"I just left the house and I love it it's wonderful especially the kids rooms 😊 bullseye 🎯 y'all did y'all thing thanks 🙏🙏❤️ with all our hearts 💞❤️🥰". WELCOME HOME!

On Friday morning (6/12), our first move brought us to a shared home in Ann Arbor, where a client referred by Avalon was preparing to begin a new chapter.

She had been staying in the shelter and arrived with a simple vision for the small room she would now call her own.

She loved pink and purple, with cheerful pops of yellow woven throughout. She asked for portraits and inspirational words on the walls—daily reminders of hope and possibility. She hoped for a TV with a DVD player, a collection of action movies to enjoy, autobiographies to read, and even a bingo game for quieter moments.

The room wasn't large, and every inch mattered. But somehow, piece by piece, everything found its place.

The colors she loved brightened the space, the artwork gave it warmth, and all of the little details she had requested came together to make the room feel unmistakably hers.

Soft-spoken and gentle, she took it all in slowly. Looking around at her newly furnished space, she smiled and simply said, "Wow, this is beautiful. I love everything." WELCOME HOME!

Our client has spent the last year at the Michigan Medicine Complex Care facility while facing a cancer diagnosis and grieving the loss of his wife. Before that, he had been moving between shelters and hotels, never truly having a place to call his own.

Referred to us by SAWC, he arrived at his new apartment with the support of his dedicated caseworker, who helped make move-in day possible.

He had only a few requests: a recliner and patio chairs. By chance—or maybe something more—we found a recliner that matched his loveseat perfectly. When we realized the queen-size linens didn't fit his oversized mattress, Jesus, one of our incredible heavy lifters, volunteered to return with the correct size. When he arrived, our client invited him in for a tour of his new home, tears filling his eyes as he shared how grateful he was.

He kept looking around in disbelief, amazed by how beautiful and homey everything felt. He told us over and over that everything was perfect. Most of all, he said he couldn't wait to sleep on his new mattress that night.

After so much loss, uncertainty, and time spent waiting for better days, this apartment had become something more than a place to live.

It had become home. WELCOME HOME.

Our client is a young, happy, energetic mom of five children, ranging in age from just 6 weeks old to 9 years. After spending the last three months living at the SOS Shelter, this sweet family walked through the door of their new home and into a brand-new chapter.

From the very beginning, our client radiated gratitude and joy. She dreamed of an elegant home filled with brown, black, cream, and white. Her son requested blue accents and anything Fortnite, while his four younger sisters hoped for pink touches and plenty of Mickey and Minnie magic.

As volunteers put the finishing touches on each room, they knew they weren't just arranging furniture and hanging artwork. They were creating a space where bedtime stories would be read, first days of school would be celebrated, and new memories would begin.

With a new job on the horizon and her family settled just in time, our client's excitement was contagious. The reveal was everything we could have hoped for—pure joy, ear-to-ear smiles, squeals of excitement, and more than a few heartfelt hugs. It was one of those moments that reminds us why this work matters so much.

Thank you to everyone who helped welcome this young family home. Because of you, this client and her children have a beautiful place to land and the opportunity to start this next chapter surrounded by comfort, dignity, and hope. WELCOME HOME!

A little while ago, this very sweet 28-year-old young man was sleeping in a tent. Today (6/11), he walked into his very first apartment and a fresh start of his own.

He didn't ask for much. Just bright colors—especially blue. So our volunteers got to work, filling every room with touches of his favorite color and hoping to create a space that finally felt like home.

As we talked, he casually mentioned a few things he enjoys: card games, sports... and that he has a toddler son who stays with him and could really use a bed and some toys.

Say no more.

With an incredible team pitching in, we finished in record time. When our client walked through the door, he was overwhelmed to find not just a furnished apartment, but a home thoughtfully prepared for both him and his little boy.

What touched him most was the special collage our art department magicians created for his son. He asked us to personally tell those talented ladies just how much his boy is going to love it.

Sometimes home isn't just about having a roof overhead. It's about knowing that someone saw your story, thought about the little details, and made room for the people you love most. WELCOME HOME!

Today’s move (6/10) came together almost effortlessly... except for one tiny detail that turned into a very big deal: the shower curtain liner. According to one of our volunteers, it was far too short and simply would not do. Standards matter around here.

Referred to us by SAWC, our client dreamed of a home filled with earth tones, touches of blue, and splashes of orange. Music is where his heart is—playing the guitar and piano are two of his favorite ways to spend his time—so we made sure those passions were reflected throughout his space.

He decided he didn’t need a dining table just yet. For now, the narrow counter is enough, while he holds onto the hope that one day his nephew might build an extension for him.

When he walked through his newly furnished home, he stopped, looked around, and said, “This is beautiful.” Tears filled his eyes as he shook each of our hands, thanking every volunteer personally.

Moments like these remind us that home isn’t just furniture and décor. It’s dignity, comfort, hope... and the feeling of finally having a place that feels like your own.
