Today on the anniversary of D-Day, we pause to honor the boundless bravery of the Greatest Generation—remembering the brave souls who stormed the beaches and everyone who risked everything for our freedom. 🇺🇸✨

At the Tug McGraw Foundation, our mission is rooted in enhancing the quality of life and holistic wellness for our veterans. Back on December 8, 2017, we lived that mission fully when we partnered with Soaring Valor to bring these WWII heroes from the Veterans Home of California, Yountville, on an unforgettable journey. Looking back at their smiles and camaraderie is the perfect reflection of the enduring spirit, courage, and resilience we honor today.

💔 A poignant reminder of the passing of time: Out of these incredible individuals who journeyed with us, sadly, only two are still with us today.

As you swipe through these beautiful memories from 2017, please join us in keeping their legacy alive by reading their names and remembering their service:

🐾 MIXED NUTTS SPOTLIGHT: From Borman Field to Hollywood Royalty! 🧢🐕

We always say that our Tug McGraw Foundation Mixed Nutts softball team is full of legendary characters, but teammate Dave Budworth and his wife Darla might just take the cake for the ultimate vintage throwback!

Long before they were bringing that "Ya Gotta Believe" spirit to the diamond in Yountville, Dave and Darla were running the show rings with their gorgeous Rough Collies. And back in the day, their prize collie, Prince, didn't just look regal—he caught the eye of Hollywood!

🎬 When Prince Met Lassie!

Check out this incredible piece of history! This snapshot features Dave, Darla, and Prince hanging out on set with none other than Jon Provost—better known to millions of 1950s and '60s television viewers as Timmy Martin!

Prince got the opportunity of a lifetime to feature as an extra and share the screen as one of Lassie’s neighborhood dog friends.

⭐ A True "Star-Studded" Legacy

Lassie was a massive cultural phenomenon that ran for 20 seasons, proving that a loyal dog and a lot of heart can conquer anything. We think that perfectly mirrors the spirit of our Mixed Nutts team.

Next time you see Dave tracking down a fly ball out at historic Borman Field, make sure to ask him what it was like to rub elbows (and paws) with television royalty!

Y’all Gotta Believe in this stat line! 🥎🧠

Age is just a number, but the numbers the Mixed Nutts senior softball team are putting up are absolutely legendary. With an average team age of 81, these players aren’t just playing a game—they are putting on a masterclass in building brain and body wealth!

Since February 17th, the team has invested a massive 61.0 TOTAL HOURS into their health, longevity, and community. Here is how the scoreboard looks:

🏃‍♂️ 22.5 Hours of Practice: Sharpening reflexes, tracking fly balls, and building neuroplasticity. 🔥 8.0 Hours of Games: High-intensity interval sprinting that keeps the heart pumping and grows new brain cells. 🎙️ 30.5 Hours of Social Engagement: Because dugout laughter, team strategy, and deep connection are the ultimate medicine for fighting cognitive decline.

🚒 🏟️ Behind Every Great Team is an Incredible Community!

We didn’t hit this incredible milestone alone. A massive, heartfelt thank you goes out to:

Station 12: Thank you for your incredible support and fueling our hustle to help us achieve this milestone! We couldn't do it without you in our corner. 🙌

Our Amazing Community: To everyone who shows up at the bleachers to root, root, root for the home team—you are the true heartbeat of Borman Field! That 30.5 hours of social wealth belongs to you just as much as it does to the players. 📣❤️

The National Standard? Crushed. 💥 According to the CDC, only about 12% of Americans over 75 meet the guidelines for combined aerobic and strength activity. The Mixed Nutts aren't just meeting it—they are sitting comfortably in the elite top tier of the entire country. 🇺🇸

She can throw folks. This full bird retired Army COL. Talk about a nutty ending! 🥜⚾️

Yesterday morning at Borman Field (Veterans Home of California, Yountville) was absolute magic, even if the scoreboard couldn’t quite keep up with our shenanigans!

Here is the recap of yesterday's wild ride:

The Scoreboard Chaos: The Mixed Nutts started the game with a casual... 40-run lead (hey, our house, our rules! 😉). But the resilient Station 12 Dirty Dozen clawed their way back, leaving us in a spectacular, hard-fought TIE! 🤝

The Surprise of the Day: One of our favorite former administrators, Lisa Peake, showed up to cheer us on and throw out the first pitch! Let’s just say she has quite the arm—Christian from Station 12 is still recovering from that absolute fastball! 🔥⚾️

The Unsung Hero: A massive shoutout to Foxy, who officially gets "the save" of the day for heroic duties in the breakfast line, successfully defeating the lumps in the pancake batter. 🥞✨

❤️ THANK YOU, COMMUNITY!

Our hearts are so full. Thank you to all the incredible residents, families, and community members who came out to support our beautifully zany, wonderfully nutty team. You make these mornings unforgettable.

📅 MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

Can't get enough of the madness? We’re doing it all over again. 👉 Next Game: June 7th!

See you on the field! 🫡🇺🇸

It’s about more than the meal. It’s about the moment. 🤝🍽️

This week, we captured this quiet interaction that perfectly represents the full circle of service. On one side, a veteran—trained for macro-service, sacrifice, and protection. On the other, a server—engaged in micro-service, hospitality, and nurturing.

At the Tug McGraw Foundation, we know that brain health isn't just a clinical journey; it’s a social one. 🧠 A social brain is a healthy brain. Every time we connect, every time we nurture or allow ourselves to be cared for by our community, we are stimulating neuroplasticity.

When a community protects those who protected them, we build collective resilience.

⚾️ COACH TOM’S PRE-GAME BRIEFING: THE MATH IS MATHING! 🧠✨

It’s the day before the big game, and the Mixed Nutts just received their final, foolproof strategic marching orders. Now, Coach Tom can’t actually be there in person tomorrow—but as you can see from the photo, a minor detail like "not being physically present" isn't about to stop his tactical genius!

He zoomed in, fired up, and laid down the unassailable, bulletproof advanced analytics that are going to guarantee a victory tomorrow.

Listen up, Mixed Nutts! Here is the official game plan:

The Wisdom Metric: The average age of our beloved Mixed Nutts is 76.

The Youth Variable: The average age of the community team is 36.

The Super-Advanced Sabermetrics: Subtract their youth from our wisdom ($76 - 36 = 40$).

💥 THE VERDICT: By the laws of vintage baseball logic, we automatically get 40 runs handed to us in the first inning. It’s just science.

The Twist? According to Coach Tom’s final, airtight calculations... after we score those 40 runs in the first, the game is mathematically guaranteed to end in a nail-biting 16-16 tie.

Look, don't overthink how we lose 24 runs along the way. Just trust the process.

In the immortal, wild, and beautiful spirit of Tug McGraw: YA GOTTA BELIEVE! (Even if you don't entirely understand the scoreboard).

Come out tomorrow, cheer on the Mixed Nutts, and witness the greatest, most mathematically impossible tie in baseball history! 🥜❤️⚾️

It was standing room only and an incredible evening welcoming the Yountville veterans. The night was filled with immense joy, wonderful camaraderie, and a deep sense of community—and the smiles in the room captured it perfectly.
We owe a debt of gratitude to Gary Jabara and his phenomenal staff at The Estate Yountville, as well as Chef Thomas Keller and his exceptional team. Your unwavering support for our veterans is inspiring, and you exemplify the true spirit of patriotism. Stay tuned for more highlights from this remarkable event. More to come on this heartfelt evening. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tonight’s Memorial Day remembrance was one of the most beautiful evening services. Pastor Jacob gave an outstanding message, and the reading of the soldier's poem, "In the Foxhole," was deeply moving. As the numbers of men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice were read, we were reminded that we must never forget their service.
We extend our sincere gratitude to WWII Veteran George, and to veterans Elizabeth, Dick, and Tom, for their beautiful readings and music this evening. Finally, thank you to Grace Church for their presence and continued support of the Yountville Veterans Home chapel.
