Happy Anniversary, White Christmas! ❄️

72 years of White Christmas and only 1️⃣ month until opening day at Arms Family Museum! 😱

On October 14, 1954, Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera Ellen brought White Christmas to the big screen. Generations later, its songs, dazzling costumes, and holiday spirit continue to bring us together.

Recently selected for preservation in the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry, this beloved film has another chapter coming to Youngstown.

Opening November 14, White Christmas: The Exhibition will feature rare original costumes and artifacts celebrating the film and the Irving Berlin legacy, all part of this year’s Memories of Christmas Past.

A special thank you to our sponsor, Coventry Lighting and Design for helping bring this celebration of holiday movie history to Arms Family Museum!

What’s your favorite song or scene from White Christmas? Tell us below! 🎶

A counter-celebration to Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day honors Indigenous American peoples and their histories, cultures, and contributions.

Here in the Mahoning Valley, several indigenous groups occupied the land for thousands of years prior to the arrival of John Young in 1796. This included people of the Adena (1000 BCE - 100 CE) and Hopewell (100 BCE - 500 CE) mound builders as well as the Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware), Seneca, and Wyandot nations during the mid-to-late 1700s. They eventually disappeared from the area as a result of disease and European colonization.

This year, for the America 250 commemoration, MVHS is highlighting Mahoning Valley stories that fit into the broader context of our state and national history. Each month has a theme, and October's theme is "Ohio Food and Farms."

Dating all the way back to 1830, Red Gate Farm was owned and operated by the Manchester family who, since the early 1800s, had been active in the community in several capacities including farming, law, education, and public office. The nearly 300-acre farm, located off of Leffingwell Road in Canfield, was sold to William Kilcawley in 1945. Kilcawley, who was president and treasurer of the Canfield Fair, lived on the farm with his family, where they raised cattle and sheep.

In 1967, the farm passed to his daughter, Anne Kilcawley Christman, who later added pigs and grain production. Anne passed away in 2002 and the farm was purchased by the City of Canfield in 2003.
