ACTION of the Mahoning Valley Statement on the U.S. Strike in Venezuela
ACTION of the Mahoning Valley is deeply concerned by today’s U.S. military strike in Venezuela and the reported capture of President Nicolás Maduro by the administration of Donald Trump.
We hold two truths at the same time.
First: the Venezuelan people have endured immense suffering for years. Under Maduro’s rule, millions have faced hunger, repression, political violence, and the erosion of democratic institutions. That suffering is real. It matters. It must not be minimized or forgotten.
Second: the use of unilateral military force by the United States—especially when framed openly in terms of economic benefit, control of resources, or the installation of a more “compliant” government—raises profound moral, legal, and humanitarian concerns. History shows that foreign interventions justified as “liberation” often deepen instability, harm civilians, and entrench cycles of violence rather than end them.
ACTION rejects the false choice between excusing authoritarian brutality and endorsing imperial violence. Justice is not achieved by replacing one form of domination with another.
Our concern today is for ordinary Venezuelans: families who did not choose this conflict, who will bear the consequences of economic disruption, retaliation, and instability long after headlines move on. Human lives cannot be collateral damage in geopolitical power struggles.
We call for:
- Immediate transparency regarding the scope, legality, and consequences of U.S. military actions
- Independent international review of any detentions and use of force
- Protection of civilians, humanitarian corridors, and access to food, medicine, and basic services
- A commitment to international law, multilateral accountability, and nonviolent pathways toward justice and self-determination
ACTION stands with people who suffer under authoritarianism and with those harmed by militarized foreign intervention. We believe justice cannot be imposed at gunpoint, and peace cannot be built on exploitation.
We will continue to speak where human dignity is at risk—whether the harm comes from dictators, corporations, or empires.
