Newest Project - the historic Berrong-Oakley House in Hiawassee, Georgia
Originally build in 1905 by a wealthy resident, but occupied only sporadically for the past 10 years and vacant for the past 5 years. The City of Hiawassee purchased it and gave responsibility to the Towns County Historical Society to manage the restoration. The house is in basically sound condition but needs a lot of TLC to restore it to its former glory. Unfortunately some vandals broke into it about a year ago and stole all of the interior doors, most of the 9 fireplace mantles, and other miscellaneous fixtures - to sell at a flea market 50 miles south of here. Most of the stolen items have been recovered and are awaiting installation. The Towns County Historical Society is raising the money to hire professionals for HVAC and other skilled work, but MBRA volunteers have already spent more than 200 hours doing other work. We have demolished the kitchen, have replaced the back porch railings, are currently replacing the front porch railings, and will be building a wheelchair ramp to access the front porch. I'll be posting more pictures

As an example of the larger projects that MBRA has been asked to do - this one by the City of Young Harris - is to build a large (16' x 40') combination deck and overlook, with a great view of the waterfalls at Cupid Falls Park. The park is located behind Young Harris College on Thomas Town Road. It took over four hundred hours by our regular volunteers (Don Braun, Andy Williams, Michael Courey, & Gordy Jones) and a great new volunteer, Joseph Pate. The site was full of rocks, and in some cases required a jackhammer to dig holes. After we finished the structure the City arranged with an electrician to wire it for lights, a fan, and outlets for use by musical groups. The City hopes to use this for visitors to see the falls, for weddings or other celebrations. This is another example of projects that would likely not ever happen at all if it would require a commercial general contractor, because of the cost a contractor would have to charge. MBRA volunteers do not charge for their labor, only for the materials used. While some of our volunteers are just energetic homeowner-level handymen, we do have a retired Civil Engineer (Don Braun) and a retired general contractor (Andy Williams) who design and lead the rest of us.

One of MBRA's smaller projects was requested by the Enotah Garden Club. They wanted an arbor built in the center of a butterfly garden at Cupid Falls Park in Young Harris. This park is behind Young Harris College along Thomas Town Road. Several of our regular volunteers (Don Braun, Andy Williams, Michael Courey and Gordy Jones) completed this job in just two days.

Back in late December of 2024 and January of 2025, MBRA was asked by the Peacock Performing Arts Center in Hayesville to help renovate their bathrooms, which were originally built around 40 years ago and were not ADA compatible. In particular the ladies room experienced long lines during intermissions because of having only two stalls. The regular volunteers for MBRA were heavily involved, as were Peacock volunteers, and were aided by numerous others who may not have been heavily involved in previous projects. This heavy work involved tearing down 12' high concrete block walls to the lobby and between the two restrooms. This required a chipping hammer and sledge hammers to loosen the block, then a chain of volunteers to move each block down to wheelbarrows and out to a dumpster. Then the floor was cut and a jackhammer was used to expose the water and drain lines. After a licensed plumber installed new plumbing and drain lines the volunteers poured new concrete flooring, which involved wheelbarrowing individual loads of wet concrete in from a concrete truck in the parking lot, then leveled and screeded. After the concrete dried, volunteers than built new walls between the two bathrooms and to the lobby, and applied insulation and drywall. Several Peacock volunteers did a great job of finishing the drop ceiling and drywall and professional plumbers and electricians finished the space. All in all, several hundred volunteer hours were expended to make this happen. Most importantly, volunteer labor enabled this remodeling project to happen at all, because the cost to hire a professional general contractor for the entire job would have been unaffordable. THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS - YOU MAKE THIS COMMUNITY BETTER FOR ALL !!

MBRA recently did some work at the Old Rock Jail in downtown Hiawassee, next to the remodeled County Courthouse. Behind the historic jail structure there is a newer annex that has been used for storage, but it was in disrepair. During the summer of 2025 several MBRA volunteers (Andy Williams, Don Braun, Michael Courey and Gordy Jones) removed the old drop ceiling and insulation, and removed the old flooring. Then in October and November the same volunteers, + David Jones and Bill Dunn laid new vinyl tile in the annex floor. When that was done the same volunteers removed old flooring in the bathroom in the jail itself, then installed new flooring. In particular, Bill Dunn did a great job in the tile work and a transition strip to the hallway.

Our most recent completed project is enclosing an open costume closet at the Peacock Performing Arts Center in Hayesville. This closet was open to the dance studio and the fire marshall told them to install a fire door to close it off. Peacock called upon us to do this work. three of our volunteers (Don Braun, Andy Williams, and Michael Courey), assisted by Peacock stagehand James "Sully" Sullivan framed and mounted a door, then hung drywall on both sides of the wall. Then Sully did the drywall finishing and painting to complete the job. You can see the "before" and after" pictures below.

Friends: MBRA has been really busy doing projects for the community - 70 so far in the past 4 years - but I haven't had time to post pictures or stories about them. The majority of posts in the past several months have little or nothing to do with MBRA, and are just random posts that FB thinks would be appropriate, I'm going to try to do more to show what we really do - stay tuned !!
