To wrap up National Volunteer Appreciation Week, several members of the Finger Lakes Region, current and former, had the opportunity to gather alongside the community of volunteers at the Guiding Eyes for the Blind Training School. This event was a celebration highlighting and bringing together passionate, impactful, and motivated people as they are an essential part of the foundation in creating life-changing partnerships and greater independence for people with vision loss. Thank you to all the volunteers for everything you do, no matter how big or small it may seem, the impact of your efforts are felt by many and make the mission of Guiding Eyes possible!

Our next spotlight member this evening during National Volunteer Week is Sydney Hogue!

Sydney has been a volunteer with Guiding Eyes since the spring of 2024, starting her journey through the Ithaca College campus club. Sydney has raised two pups thus far--Yellsea, who is now a brood and hopes she is having puppies soon, and she was the starting raiser for Venice. Sydney is also one of our social media team members, helping to create, write, and publish posts for our Finger Lakes social media pages!

Sydney’s favorite Guiding Eyes memory was taking her first pup, Yellsea, to Disney World. This trip provided a wonderful challenge for the two of them and afforded them the opportunity to grow so much as a pair through that trip. She shares "it was far from perfect, but we both learned a lot, and I look forward to taking another pup there in the future.”

Sydney highlights that the community is her favorite part about being a member of Guiding Eyes for the Blind, having met her best friends through this club and connections that will last beyond her time in college. Sydney says “I am truly grateful to Guiding Eyes for bringing all these lovely people into my life.”

Sydney’s advice for those in the puppy raising community is to ask questions and use your resources! Everyone in the Guiding Eyes community is here to help, “you do not need to work through any of the challenges you may face alone. We are all after a common goal to take these puppies and turn them into future guide dogs.”

Thank you, Sydney, for your love and dedication to Guiding Eyes and the region!

To celebrate and honor the hard work, dedication, and compassion of our region’s volunteers for National Volunteer Week, today we are shining the spotlight on Madison Malanowski!

Madison has been volunteering with Guiding Eyes for the Blind since the end of 2021, though she says her GEB “origin story” started in Ithaca back in the 1990s. Her mom became a raiser while at the Cornell Vet School and went on to raise a total of 5 dogs—3 guide dogs, 1 stud, and 1 released dog (becoming Madison’s childhood dog, Carson). Though her parents stopped raising, Madison grew up knowing that she one day would, and she finally got certified in 2021. She has raised four dogs—Nitro, a male yellow lab; Yosemite, a male black lab; Azul, a female yellow lab; and she is currently starting Emmeline, a female yellow lab. At the moment she is located in the Monroe region, but she will be returning to the Finger Lakes region in the fall.

Madison shares that her favorite memory from Guiding Eyes was when she was offered the opportunity to walk with her first dog, Nitro, in harness. At the time, Nitro was in the Specialized Training Program, designed to train guide dogs for people with blindness/vision loss who have additional disabilities. After Nitro had been in training for over 14 months, his trainer allowed her to visit him while she was doing an internship at GEB.

She says, “The moment I picked up his handle and cued him ‘forward’, I knew he was exactly where he was meant to be. Walking with him was a once in a lifetime experience that is forever etched in my memory, and I could not only see, but feel, that he was born to do this. That walk changed my perspective on raising, and the next 5 months before he graduated were filled with peace knowing he was happy, confident, loved, and doing what he was meant to do.” She said that seeing him graduate and getting to meet his handler was also an incredible experience. She recalls, “seeing them together and seeing the love they already had was so special. I left graduation feeling proud of the dog he had become, knowing the team would do amazing things together and that he would be so loved by his new family.”

When asked about her favorite part of being a volunteer Madison said there are many! She loves the community and the lifelong friends she has made. She has also met so many incredible dogs, and she loves to contribute to their journey as they go on to change somebody’s life. She says, “Watching them learn and grow, from tiny puppies who tumble into the big wide world with bright eyes and eagerness, to a confident mature dog taking on IFT and beyond is just a beautiful thing to be a part of.”

Madison’s advice to someone thinking about volunteering with the organization is to slow down, breath, and take it all in. She shares, “it goes by so quickly, blink and you will miss the wonder that is the process. It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey. Your time together is so short, so enjoy every step and don’t worry about what everyone else is doing or thinking, because all that matters is the puppy in front of you. You’ll get there, so there’s no need to rush. And just have fun!”

Thank you so much, Madison, for your enthusiasm in answering these questions, and for your constant dedication to this organization both inside and outside of our region.

Our next feature for National Volunteer Week is McKenna Deignan!

McKenna has been volunteering with Guiding Eyes for the Blind for 4 years. She got involved through Ithaca College’s club and has continued volunteering outside of being on campus. Though she spends her time now as a volunteer sitter, she also raised a lovely female black lab named Babs.

McKenna shares that her favorite memory from volunteering is all the different dogs that she has had the opportunity to work with. She shares, “I have had the great opportunities to see so many of them pass their IFT and be working guide dogs.” Additionally, she says her other favorite memory is raising her first pup Babs, “I will forever cherish my time raising her. She was a special girl and even though she did not get to be a guide dog she lives the best pet life.”

Being a part of the Guiding Eyes community is Mckenna’s favorite part of being a volunteer. She remarks about all the people she has met throughout this experience and how everyone was always so welcoming and inviting. “Whenever someone needs help there is always a strong community ready to help out. I have made life long friends and relationships through this organization and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

McKenna’s one advice to those interested in joining is to just do it! She explains, “It is such a rewarding experience and yes raising can be difficult, but you learn so much about yourself throughout the process!”

Thank you McKenna for continued support and contribution to Guiding Eyes for the Blind and the Finger Lakes region!

To celebrate and honor the hard work, dedication, and compassion of our region’s volunteers for National Volunteer Week, we are honoring Ashley Kitterman!

Ashley has been a member of Guiding Eyes for the Blind for almost two years. She started out through Cornell University’s club as a sitter for over a year, and is now raising her first pup, Valencia, a female yellow lab.

Ashley’s favorite memory from being a part of Guiding Eyes was from the day she got Valencia. She says that “Bringing her home was so special and after just a few hours of getting settled in my home, she curled up in my lap and fell asleep. I knew our bond was special early on!” Ashley shares that her favorite part of being a volunteer is the people she has met. “I have met some of my best friends through the Guiding Eyes community. The amount of support I’ve gotten from other raisers is so special and I’m so thankful for getting to know everyone as well as everyone’s lovely pups!”

Ashley’s advice to anyone interested in becoming a raiser for Guiding Eyes is that getting a puppy is so worth it. She recalls, “I was hesitant for a while, as I wasn't sure I'd be able to say goodbye. Now that I have Valencia, I know our time together was worth it, no matter how hard saying goodbye may be. She is going to change someone's life some day, just as much as she's changed mine.”

Thank you Ashley for your continued dedication and support to our organization and our region!

Now featuring veteran puppy raisers and our region’s Co-Regional Coordinator, Shannon and Thane Doubet!

Shannon and Thane have been volunteering for Guiding Eyes for 9 years. Shannon shares they have some family history with the organization as her mother and father-in-law raised for Guiding Eyes about 25 years ago! In addition to currently raising both Isla (1I324) a female yellow lab and Gremlin (2G325) a male black lab, Shannon is our amazing Co-Regional Coordinator!

One of their favorite memories brings us back to the first pup they raised, Westly (6W17). Westly was part of the Running Guides Relay Team, alongside Gus and Waffle, Tom Panek, the President and CEO of Guiding Eyes at the time, used in 2019 to lead him in the NYC half marathon. Westley was Tom’s guide dog for a few months, before he decided working full time was not for him. The Doubet’s then got to adopt him and he has been spreading joy as a Therapy Pet ever since!

As members of Guiding Eyes, they love being a part of the lives of 14 very special dogs! They currently have 8 dogs out in the world as working Guides (Ursa, Jenko, Austin, Iris, Max, Ollie, Ariana, & Brooklyn), 1 breed dog (Arden), 1 at the training school (Ithaca), 2 still in puppy training with them (Isla & Gremlin), and 2 at home with them working as Therapy Pets and helping train future guide dogs (Westley - retired guide, Mission - released). Their son Quinn raised Violet, who had 3 litters, and they raised one from each (Arden, Ariana, & Brooklyn). Arden has had 2 litters and they are currently raising one from each (Isla & Gremlin). Isla is headed back to Guiding Eyes in May for breed evaluation. If she becomes a breed dog, they plan to raise one from each of her litters as well, making a fourth generation puppy to be raised by their family! No such thing as too much puppy love in their home!

In terms of advice for those interested in joining, Shannon says “Do it!! There is nothing more rewarding than knowing a puppy you raised is making such a difference in someone's life.”

Thank you, Shannon and Thane, for all the time, energy, and unwavering support you have for Guiding Eyes and the Finger Lakes region!
