Yes, they want help meeting new people.

Yes, they want help making new friends.

Yes, they want help staying connected to the friends they already have.

That’s what more than 25,000 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) shared in a national survey.

The same survey found that while 37% want to be part of more groups in their community, only 25% currently participate in one.

This is why programs like SPARC matter.

Through recreation, the arts, athletics, wellness programs, day trips, and weekend adventures, SPARC creates more opportunities for people with IDD to get involved, meet others, and become part of a community.

The backpack is packed. But is the plan?

For many students in the IDD community, heading back to school also means revisiting their IEP.

An Individualized Education Plan outlines the goals, services, accommodations, and support a student needs to learn and participate at school.

And some of the skills written into that plan...communication, independence, confidence, and building relationships...keep developing after the school day ends.

SPARC gives participants more places to practice those skills naturally, while making friends, joining activities, taking trips, and being part of a group.

As the new school year begins, take another look at the IEP and then take a look at what SPARC can add to the year ahead.

That's how many children in the United States, roughly 17%, ages 3–17, have one or more developmental disabilities.

That means in nearly every school, neighborhood, and community, there are young people who deserve places where they can connect, build friendships, explore their interests, and feel like they belong.

That’s what SPARC is here to create.

More trips. More experiences. More friendships. More chances for people to discover WHAT they enjoy and WHO they enjoy doing it with.

The best stories usually start with: “You had to be there.”

And that’s exactly the point of SPARC Weekend & Overnight Adventures.

The ride there.
The inside jokes.
The new place someone was nervous to try.
The activity that turns into a favorite memory.
The moment a participant realizes they can do more, go more, try more, and be more independent.

And now, that adventure is coming to Rockland County.

Because weekends should not feel like a blank space on the calendar.

They should feel like possibility.

Somewhere to go.
Something to look forward to.
A group to be part of.
A story to come home with.

And at SPARC, pride is not just a word we post once a year.

It looks like participants showing up exactly as they are.

It looks like communication devices being part of the conversation.

It looks like mobility devices on the dance floor.

It looks like routines being respected, choices being offered, support being there without taking over, and joy being taken seriously.

It looks like someone walking into a room and not having to shrink, explain, mask, or prove they belong.

Disability Pride is about visibility.

But even more than that?

It’s about dignity.

It’s about access.

It’s about community.
