🌳 Spongy Moths Threaten Our Forests — Action Coming to Rocky Ridge County Park 🌳
Spongy moths are a major threat to Pennsylvania’s forests. These invasive insects feed aggressively on oak and other native trees, stripping them of leaves and weakening entire ecosystems in just a matter of weeks.
According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, spongy moths are responsible for an estimated $868 million in damage each year across the U.S.—a devastating toll on our natural resources, wildlife habitats, and local economies.
At York County Parks, we’ve been closely monitoring the parks, and have identified a significant spongy moth population at Rocky Ridge Park. To protect the health of the park’s forest, an aerial insecticide treatment is scheduled Wednesday May 7th.
📅 Rocky Ridge Park will be closed for most of the day on Wednesday May 7th, during the treatment to allow for proper application and follow-up.
🧼 All Play equipment and tables will be thoroughly cleaned before reopening, ensuring a safe and welcoming return for visitors.
We appreciate your understanding as we take this important step to preserve and protect our forests.
