First I want to say THANK YOU to everyone who came by and purchased plants at our annual York Middle FFA Spring Plant Sale this past Saturday! We had a great turn out and SOLD OUT of a few vegetable varieties and flowers.

However, we still have lots of other vegetable plants and flowers to fill your gardens! Come see us at the York Middle School greenhouse this week and next (or until we sell out) from 4 PM to 5:30 PM. ATTENTION: The annual York Middle FFA Spring Plant Sale will begin NEXT Saturday, April 16, 2022 from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM!

The sale will take place at the York Middle School Greenhouse and will also be open in the afternoons the following week, or until we sell out!

This week has been a busy one for the York Middle FFA Chapter, and it’s only Wednesday!

Yesterday, Ms. Wilkins and this year’s York Middle FFA Tool ID team traveled to Laurens High School to compete in the regional Tool ID Career Development Event. Even though we did not make the list of top ten teams, our guys did a great job representing our chapter as one of the only two middle school teams in the competition! Before the event yesterday, these guys put in hours of studying over 180 different tools and attended multiple practices after school. We are so proud of their hard work! 🛠

Today, our York Middle FFA members attended our March meeting and put in a lot of hard work too! With our annual Spring Plant Sale right around the corner, we decided to spruce up the raised garden beds next to the greenhouse that had become overgrown with weeds and a few leftover plants from last year. Over 40 members got their hands dirty and removed the weeds, added fresh topsoil to each bed, then topped them all with garden soil to soon plant different flowers and vegetables in! It was a beautiful day to be outside and we cannot wait for many more like it. 🌞

It’s officially the busiest season of the year for our York Middle agriculture students, and their teacher! 😅

Spring is near and our 8th graders have been working diligently to fill up our greenhouse for the annual York Middle FFA Spring Plant Sale! 🌱

They started the process by sowing numerous varieties of flower and vegetable seeds, then carefully watered and maintained the germinated seedlings, and are now transplanting them into larger containers for the sale! This group of students have learned all about the process of germination, the things that plants need to grow and flourish, and most importantly… PATIENCE! 😅

As the 3rd quarter of this school year comes to an end, I cannot help but be proud of all that these ~60 eighth graders accomplished. Their time in my class may be over, but they definitely left their mark on our greenhouse. But, we’re on the home stretch as our last nine-weeks of the year begins tomorrow, and I cannot wait to see the work that my new group puts in out here! 💚

We do not have an official date for our annual plant sale yet, but the target is mid-April. Stay tuned for updates on that and the amazing plants we will be providing you this year! As always, thank you for supporting the *growing* York Middle FFA Chapter and agriculture program!

It’s the best week of the year to be an FFA member… Happy National FFA Week! 💙💛

National FFA Week was first recognized in 1948 for students involved in their local FFA chapters to celebrate their own successes, and their passion for agriculture.

To celebrate here at York Middle School, all students are encouraged to participate in the theme days posted on the flyer below. Wear your best outfits to show your support of the FFA!

As FFA members, we are also advocates for agriculture. This week we will be posting daily fun facts and trivia about the industry that feeds us, so stay tuned! 🙂

It’s official - Quarter #3 at York Middle starts tomorrow! It has been a great year in YMS Agriculture so far, but we definitely cannot wait to see what the Spring semester holds! 😁

However, before we rush into 2022, we need to acknowledge the awesome creativity and work put forth by last quarter’s 8th graders in Ag. During the fall semester, Ms. Wilkins’ eighth grade classes focus heavily on plant and environmental science, including the study of wildlife native to South Carolina. As a final project for the quarter, students worked in small groups to complete detailed research about a specific wildlife species before creating a “shoebox” diorama of the habitat that species resides in. Their habitats had to include food and water sources, adequate shelter, and potential prey/predators.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year to be a York Middle FFA member! 🎄🎁

Yesterday was our last FFA meeting of 2021, and we spent it enjoying hot chocolate, writing Christmas cards, and watching none other than the Grinch!

Our FFA members wrote over 90 Christmas and holiday cards for the residents of White Oak Manor here in York, which will be delivered later this week. Our members added holiday-themed jokes and well wishes to the cards, making them extra special for the ones who receive them!

This group of dedicated, caring students never fail to amaze me. I cannot wait to see what all they accomplish during the Spring semester!

Our York Middle FFA Chapter members had a blast representing our program and school in the York and Hickory Grove Christmas parades this weekend! 🎄

We had over 30 members participate in the parades, and they loved wishing people a Merry Christmas, singing Christmas carols (as well as “old” country songs 😅,) and spending quality time with each other outside of school.

Huge shoutout to all of our volunteers that helped make sure each parade ran smoothly, and to Fairfax Farms for letting us ride in style behind their tractor!

Another successful York Middle FFA meeting is in the books for the year!

We had over SIXTY seventh and eighth grade students in attendance this evening, and I am one grateful Ag teacher to have such an extraordinary membership!

Today’s meeting and activity focused on giving back to our school since the Thanksgiving holiday is next week. Our members discussed a few important events coming up, enjoyed some pizza, then went outside to beautify our front sign and planters near the school’s entrance. We plan to maintain the flowers in the planters throughout the year, as well as add some to the front sign in the spring.

This time next month, our members will be participating in different activities led by our newly installed York Middle FFA Officers! Interested eighth grade students had to fill out an application that will be analyzed by some of their teachers and school administration. Stay tuned for updates in the next couple of weeks to see who will be granted the opportunity to serve our York Middle FFA Chapter for the remainder of the school year!

The first York Middle FFA meeting of the year took place yesterday afternoon and it was a “spooktacular” time! 🎃

Over 50 seventh and eighth grade students came together after school to learn more about the FFA, the opportunities they will have as members, and our chapter goals for the year. They then enjoyed a little friendly competition as they worked together to carve the best pumpkin! The teachers and staff at York Middle picked their favorite today, and those students received a special prize.

A big thank you goes to Black's Peaches for donating the pumpkins and for always supporting our FFA chapter!

Our first meeting was one for the books, and I cannot wait to see what all these FFA members accomplish this year!

Happy (almost) Halloween everyone!

To celebrate, our first York Middle FFA meeting of the school year will take place this Thursday, October 28, 2021 from 3:45 (dismissal) until 5:30 PM.

Any seventh or eighth grade student interested in becoming a York Middle FFA member, and/or wants to learn more about our organization, is encouraged to attend! There will be spooky snacks, music, and of course… the pumpkin carving contest!

Students will work together to carve the best pumpkin, and our YMS teachers and staff will select their favorite during school on Friday! Winners will be announced at the end of the day and will receive a special prize from Ms. Wilkins.

Spread the word and be sure to join us for our first FFA meeting of the year! 🎃
