"The spike in arrests here has happened with such little fanfare that people from other parts of Pennsylvania are stunned when their immigrant neighbors are arrested and detained on a long-distance trip that passed through York County and its policy checkpoints."
Many in our York community are all too aware of the increased enforcement and the impact on our neighbors.

“I think for the majority of the detained, there’s at least two people on the outside who are fighting for them, struggling. There’s a lot of people who are unseen.

You can count the number of detained individuals in ICE facilities, but you can’t really count the number of people affected."

"ICE is just churning bodies into the detention system."

The needs have changed. Our work has evolved. Our commitment to immigrant justice remains.

For 30 years, PIRC has responded to the changing needs of immigrant communities across Pennsylvania. What began in 1996 as a response to the urgent legal needs of immigrants in detention has grown into an organization providing free legal services and support to immigrants and families across the Commonwealth.

As we celebrate PIRC’s 30th anniversary, Light of Liberty gives us a chance to recognize the people who have carried that commitment forward and those who continue to stand with immigrant communities today.

Join us September 16 as we celebrate 30 years of immigrant justice in Pennsylvania and the community that continues to make this work possible.

We are honored to welcome Rosamaria Cristello, Founder and Executive Director of the Latino Community Center in Pittsburgh, as the keynote speaker for PIRC’s 2026 Light of Liberty Awards Reception!

Drawing from her own experience growing up as an immigrant, Rosamaria has dedicated her career to creating stronger pathways for Latino children, youth, and families through education, family support, and community building.

In 2023, Rosamaria was selected for the inaugural Obama Foundation Leaders USA program, joining 100 emerging leaders from across the country. She also serves on Pennsylvania’s Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs.

At a time when immigrant communities are facing extraordinary challenges, we are grateful to have Rosamaria join us to share her story, her perspective, and her vision for what is possible when communities come together.

Join us on September 16 for an evening of celebration as we recognize the people who continue to show up for immigrant communities in PA.
