Juneteenth marks the day enslaved Black Americans in Texas learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had already declared it.

Freedom existed on paper. It did not exist in practice.

That lesson still matters.

Today, we continue to see the effects of generations of discrimination in housing, healthcare, education, employment, and the criminal justice system. History is not just something we remember. It is something we inherit.

Juneteenth is a celebration of Black resilience, but it is also a challenge to all of us: freedom means little if access, opportunity, and dignity are still out of reach for too many people.

Justice delayed was the story of Juneteenth.

Justice denied remains a reality for many today.

One ask.

That’s all we’re asking from our community this week.

If housing instability, shelter access, street outreach, dignity, and belonging matter to you, we are asking you to do one thing before the end of the month:

Reach out to one local elected official, attend one public meeting, or submit one public comment and ask this question:

“What is one action our community can take in the next 12 months to reduce barriers for people experiencing housing instability?”

No speeches.
No political parties.
No arguing.

Just ask.
Listen.
Share what you learn.

At Friends & Neighbors, we believe solutions get stronger when they are built with communities, not for communities.

Real change does not usually begin with everyone agreeing.
It begins when ordinary people consistently show up in the rooms where decisions are being made.

If you participated, come back and comment what you learned below. We would love to collect what our community is hearing and keep the conversation moving forward.

We've seen an increase in reports and sightings of people living outdoors throughout our community.

We want you to know: we're aware, we're responding, and we're here to help.

If you see someone who may be struggling, know someone who needs support, or if you yourself are in need of assistance, please reach out to Friends & Neighbors of PA at 717-699-8445.

Many people are surprised to learn just how much help is available through our outreach and day shelter services. We can assist with:

• Hygiene supplies and survival gear
• Food and basic necessities
• Connections to medical, mental health, addiction treatment, and recovery services
• Harm reduction supplies
• Help obtaining identification documents
• Access to computers and free Wi-Fi
• Assistance applying for government phone programs and benefits
• Mail services and P.O. box access
• Referrals to community resources and housing supports
• A safe place to spend time and people who genuinely care

Not everyone sleeping outside is visible. Not everyone asking for help knows where to find it. Sometimes all it takes is one phone call, one conversation, or one person willing to connect someone to resources.

Our unhoused neighbors are members of this community. They deserve dignity, support, and the opportunity to access services that can improve their situation.

If you encounter someone who may need help, don't assume someone else has already reached out.

Together, we can make sure no one has to navigate hardship alone.

Some people pass through an organization.

Others become part of its foundation.

Over the past two years, Kayan Cross has become woven into the fabric of Friends & Neighbors. What started as one advocate making a move from Colorado to Pennsylvania became something much bigger. Through conversations, miles walked, difficult moments, victories, setbacks, and second chances, Kayan poured his whole heart into this work and into the people behind it.

Many of you know Kayan for his unmistakable style, a classic soul with a love for great shoes, sharp hats, and a smile that lights up a room. But what truly set him apart wasn't what he wore. It was how he showed up.

He showed up for people when they felt forgotten.
He showed up for our team when things got hard.
He showed up with compassion, honesty, humor, and a deep well of understanding.

The impact he leaves behind cannot be measured by numbers. It's found in the bridges he built, the trust he earned, the lives he helped change, and the hope he helped restore. His fingerprints can be found throughout this organization and throughout the York community.

While it's difficult to imagine Friends & Neighbors without Kayan's daily presence, this isn't a goodbye born from loss alone. It is also a celebration of growth, purpose, and the next chapter.

Kayan, thank you for every mile walked, every hand extended, every barrier torn down, and every bit of good trouble you stirred up along the way.

York is better because you were here. Friends & Neighbors is stronger because you were part of it.

We wish you nothing but success, joy, and purpose in whatever comes next. And knowing you, we're pretty sure you're not done making good trouble yet. ❤️

With love,

Your Friends & Neighbors Family

Friday is payday for some people.

For others, it's another day of trying to survive.

While many of us are deciding where to eat tonight, someone is deciding whether to spend their last few dollars on food, transportation, or a motel room.

While many of us are planning our weekend, someone is planning where they can safely sleep without being moved along.

The difference between those two realities is often much smaller than we'd like to believe.

A missed paycheck.
A medical emergency.
A family crisis.
A rent increase.

Homelessness is closer to home than most people think.

This weekend, donate your support to provide meals, fund outreach, give supplies, build connection, and hope to people who need it most.

Homelessness doesn't take weekends off.

Neither can we.

At Friends & Neighbors, we often talk about creating spaces where people feel seen, valued, and welcomed. For us, that isn't a slogan. It's a daily practice.

The Beacon was built to be a true safe place. A place where people can walk through the door as they are, carrying whatever story, struggle, identity, or experience they have, and know they will be treated with dignity and respect.

As Pride Month begins, we want to recognize and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ members of our community, including the volunteers, staff, supporters, and neighbors who help make this organization what it is. Friends & Neighbors is stronger, more compassionate, and more complete because of the diverse people who share their talents, perspectives, and lives with us.

The roots of Pride are found in community, courage, and the belief that every person deserves to live authentically and safely. Those values are deeply connected to the work we do every day.

Whether you are seeking support, offering help, or simply looking for a place to belong, you are welcome here.

Happy Pride Month from all of us at Friends & Neighbors. ❤️
