🐦We are so close! With just 5 days left in the MYBC Giving Drive, we're within a few hundred dollars of our $3,500 goal. Every dollar goes directly toward keeping field trips, workshops, and scholarships free for young birders in Maine.

If you haven't donated yet, now is the time — and if you have, a quick share of this post could put us over the top.

🐦 Big news from the Maine Young Birders Club!

For the first time since MYBC was founded in 2017, membership is completely FREE! We’re eliminating annual dues so that every young birder in southern Maine can participate, no matter what.

To keep our field trips, workshops, and scholarships going, we’re launching our first-ever MYBC Giving Drive. Our goal is to raise $3,500 by May 31. If you’d like to support the next generation of Maine birders, we’d love your help — whether that’s a donation, a share, or spreading the word to friends, family, or local businesses who might want to get involved.

A very nice woodpecker size comparison

‼️ADDED LEWIS’S & IVORY BILLED TO LINE UP‼️ADDED YELLOW BELLIED SAP SUCKER too 🥰🤗‼️ADDED AMERICAN THREE TOED‼️

Most people hear a pileated woodpecker long before they ever see one 🌲

The pounding sounds like someone swinging a bat against a dead tree deep in the woods.

Then suddenly she lands nearby — and everything changes.

She’s massive compared to the little downies and hairies most people know. Nearly crow-sized, with a bright red crest and powerful beak that can tear through dead wood like bark paper.

Those big rectangular holes in trees? That’s her signature. No other woodpecker makes them quite the same.

And when she’s done nesting, her abandoned cavities become prime real estate for owls, ducks, squirrels, and other wildlife that can’t carve homes of their own 🪵

That “dead” tree in your yard may actually be one of the most important parts of the forest ecosystem 🌿

We're one of 10(!) organizations participating in this great event.

A Celebration of Fish and Rivers on May 23rd, World Fish Migration Day
Come join us on Saturday, May 23rd for a celebration of fish and rivers on World Fish Migration Day.

TEN great organizations will be participating!!!

In alphabetical order: Eldridge Brothers Fly Shop, the Kennebunk Conservation Commission, Kennebunk Land Trust, the Kennebunk River Restoration Committee, the Maine Coast Heritage Trust, Maine Rivers, the Mousam and Kennebunk Rivers Alliance, the Planeteers of Southern Maine, the Sebago Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and York County Audubon!

There will be a wide variety of exhibits and activities for all ages. From fly casting and fly tying demos and lessons to activities for younger fans of fish and rivers. This should also be a good opportunity to see alewives and shad on their spring migration. We will be joined by scientists, including USM biologist Dr. Karen Wilson, who will be able to answer questions about sea-run fish.

The location is Rogers Pond beside the Mousam River off of Water Street in Kennebunk. The hours are 1 to 4. Parking is available at Rogers Pond, but also beside and behind the Kennebunk Sewer District offices across Water Street from the entrance to the pond. Rain date is Sunday, May 24th.

We hope to see you!

Come join us this Saturday for a great Birding by Ear workshop! Join expert bird mimic Dan Gardoqui who will help you connect with birds you can’t see by getting to know their songs and calls (as well as what they’re saying). In this program, we’ll do a little exploring on foot, but a lot more listening with our ears. Dan can help you learn the calls by mimicking them for the group as you hear and see the actual birds in the field. If you’re experienced with visual bird identification, this course will be a good next step in building your birding skills.
Dan Gardoqui has been practicing and sharing his passion for bird language, wildlife tracking and naturalist skills for over 30 years. Dan has a M.S. in Natural Resources, is a Professional Wildlife Tracker, Registered Maine Guide, and served as Science Faculty at Granite State College. He has contributed to multiple wildlife research projects and served as science editor for the bird language book What the Robin Knows. Dan has helped start and direct multiple nature connection organizations and he currently serves as the Education & Outreach Director at the Center for Wildlife, just up the road from his home in Cape Neddick, Maine.

York County Audubon is co-hosting this program with and at The Wells Reserve. It will run from 7 am till 10 am. Advance registration is required, and the cost is $32 for members (of either YCA/Maine Audubon or the Wells Reserve), or $40 for non-members. To register, please email [email protected] or call Suzanne at (207) 646-1555 x116. Please note: Program fee does not include site admission fee.
