Southern California Philharmonic

Southern California Philharmonic The Southern California Philharmonic is a community orchestra that provides local musicians with an opportunity to perform the great orchestral works.

The Mission of the Southern California Philharmonic is to foster lifelong appreciation of, enthusiasm for, and participation in the extraordinary gift of music. This is accomplished by:

-Providing our community with high-quality musical performances by a locally-based symphony orchestra.

-Providing area students, teachers and educational institutions with a classical music resource. And,

-Provi

ding local musicians with an opportunity to explore and perform great orchestral literature. The SoCal Phil is dedicated to serving local audiences, musicians and students by providing an opportunity for direct participation in a priceless cultural heritage. The members of the orchestra are diverse in age and experience. Often, college-age students who aren't majoring in music, despite serious involvement in high school, are unable to join their school's orchestra due to scheduling conflicts. They'll find the rehearsal schedule and quality of playing at SCP to be ideal. Likewise, adults wishing to maintain music performance in their busy lives can depend on SCP to serve this need. SCP regularly performs with chorale groups, utilizes unique instrumentation such as a Latin-influenced guitar concerto, and has even incorporated visual art to accompany contemporary works.

🎶 Music Spotlight: Wenlan Jackson 🎶

We’re proud to spotlight former Southern California Philharmonic Young Artist participant Wenlan Jackson, whose musical journey continues to inspire us all.

After performing as a soloist with SCP’s Young Artist program in 2023, Wenlan went on to receive a prestigious Fulbright Award to Germany and is now pursuing a Master of Music at Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler. 🇩🇪✨

“I am so grateful to the SoCal Phil for the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the orchestra. This was a wonderful experience that ultimately supported my grant application. I am thankful to the orchestra and to Branden Muresan for making this possible!”

Stories like Wenlan’s remind us why supporting young artists matters. 🎻

Join us next week for our upcoming salon chamber concert, Sounds of Spain, on Friday, May 23, and help us continue creating opportunities for the next generation of musicians. Link in bio.

Last chance tonight! 🎶

The Southern California Philharmonic closes its Young Artists Showcase weekend tonight, and this program builds to one of the most thrilling endings in orchestral music.

In this video clip, you’re hearing the third and fourth movements of Pines of Rome by Ottorino Respighi. Lush piano swells and a peaceful clarinet solo set the scene—until something magical happens: birdsong suddenly fills the hall. 🐦

Then, just as quickly, the chirping fades and gives way to the haunting march of a ghostly Roman army. The music grows, layer by layer, until it reaches one of the most powerful conclusions in all of Italian orchestral music.

Don’t miss the Young Artists Showcase this weekend with Music Director Branden Muresan leading an inspiring program featuring extraordinary rising soloists:

🎻 Natalie Xu performing Tzigane by Maurice Ravel
🎻 Ryan Kim performing the Cello Concerto in A minor by Camille Saint-Saëns
🎶 Damian Eloy Silvera performing Clarinet Concerto No. 2 by Bernhard Henrik Crusell

📍 St. Paul’s Episcopal Church
📅 Tonight – Saturday, March 7

There’s still time to join us—but seats won’t last long.

An Orchestra Love Story 💕🎶 Music has always been at the heart of Ann & Jon Goldman’s journey.

Ann (our wonderful piccolo player) and Jon (violist extraordinaire) first met while playing in the same ensemble in Scottsdale, Arizona — and 44 years of marriage later, they’re still making beautiful music together, now with SCP.

🎼 Ann began flute in 3rd grade and added piccolo in 5th.
🎻 Jon started viola in 5th grade.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Together they created a real-life “Brady Bunch” family — 6 kids in total!

From shared rehearsals to shared life, their story is a beautiful reminder that music connects us across decades, cities, and stages — and we’re so grateful they’re part of the So Cal Phil family. 🎶🎶

This Valentine’s Day 💖 we’re celebrating the people and moments that make our orchestra special.
