Scout Troop 733 - Yorba Linda

Scout Troop 733 - Yorba Linda Troop 733 is an outdoor focused,
boy-led troop.

The boys select
the activities for the year, plan the
activities, buy their own food, cook their
own meals, pack their own packs, setup
and teardown camp, and lead all
outdoor activities and troop meetings.

Why Troop 733?
1. We are a boy-led troop. Our scouts plan the annual calendar of events, plan and run every meeting and campout, do their own
food shopping, cook and clean up their own meals, pack and unpack the troop trailer, etc. It’s never pretty and never perfect, but
this is how they learn leadership skills. Note that not every troop is like this.
2. Mixed age patrols. Some troops have a new-scout patrol which works well, and troops have great success with this. We believe
that mixed age patrols allow for a better opportunity for older scouts to teach younger scouts, which we witness on every
campout. (Note that similar-aged boys tent together).
3. We go outside. A lot…
4. We recognize that good scouts are good citizens and as a result are in multiple activities in our community. Attend when you
can. Obviously, the more a boy puts into Scouts the more he gets out of it. Our Eagle Scouts have been in band, swimming, ASB,
baseball, and many more activities.
5. We treat our troop like a family.
6. We do not pressure our scouts to advance, and we have good success with advancement to Eagle Scout. They may start slow
sometimes, but each in their own time see their scout brothers advancing and create their own drive for advancement, which is
wonderful to watch.
7. Did we say we go outside a lot? Many merit badges and prestigious and rare awards are easy for our boys to earn just by
participating in normal troop activities like camping, hiking, backpacking, and canoeing.
8. We have strong adult commitment. Every adult leader that works with the boys is trained in the program. Adults participating in
backpack trips are trained in both backpacking (4 training days) and wilderness first aid (bi-annual 16-hour class). We have a
strong committee as well, keeping the troop running in the background, such as finances, advancement, etc.
9. We have a symbiotic relationship with the Danish Lutheran Church, our charter organization. We help them with a lot of their
cultural events, and they provide amazing resources for us. We also support the community in other annual service events.
10. We go to a different summer camp every year that the scouts choose. This provides opportunities for many different experiences
and merit badges vs. troops that go to the same destination every year.
