Our Worst Fears…Realized 😭

We continue to see our milkw**d at our Monarch Waystation at Longbay Park being “enjoyed.” However, anecdotally, we are not seeing the numbers of monarch butterflies this year as we saw last year. For the first time in 8 years, we did not run out of milkw**d.

If you live in Southern California or Ventura County, we’d like to hear about your observations. Are you seeing more/fewer monarchs than last year?About the same? Are your monarchs emerging with deformed wings? Dying prematurely from OE or pesticide? Attacked by the tachinid fly?

Please post comments ⬇️ and we will send your observations to Xerces and CFW. Thank you!

📣May Update🦋

Good News!
Yes, we’re still here!

Check out our pictures—thanks to the vision of a new team member, Longbay will have a new area under the pepper tree designated for milkw**d and nectar plants for monarchs. The paver stones are encircling the tree and will be edged with sunflowers. Already there is milkw**d, yarrow, verbena, and bidens.

Other team members have been busy making creative markers for our plants. Our showy milkw**d looks so proud and will soon be getting a new marker.

Team members have also added native plants, grown from cuttings. There are also a variety of seeds that have been spread in various areas.

As if so say “thank you,” quite a few monarchs have been flirting by while we worked, clearing out w**ds and old vegetation and planting.

📣May 2022 Longbay Update—Good News to Share🦋

We are still here❣️

We are happy to announce that we have a new member, Jennifer, who has inspired a reimagining of this monarch Waystation. She is focusing on the pepper tree and designating that area for only milkw**d and nectaring plants that attract monarchs. The soil there is moist. She has already planted verbena and bidens there and added stepping stones. She also added some milkw**d plants nearby with painted rocks.

Christina moved the butterfly bush and several milkw**d plants to that area as well.

Laura, in the meantime, made some colorful markers, which adds a personal touch to the garden.

The irrigation to the slopes was turned off for several weeks, unbeknownst to us and to the landscaper. We lost some milkw**d and other plants and have since corrected the problem.

Sue has continued to focus on CA native plants and added a lemon sumac and a mallow.

Vicki continues to help with hand watering.

More monarch butterflies have been seen visiting our garden than ever.

Teamwork is dream work♥️🐛🌻🦋🪴🙌🏻😍

Spring Cleaning🧹🧼🧽

We took a break from IG for the winter, but we’ve still been busy at our monarch Waystation at Longbay park in Eastlake Village.

Thanks to our volunteers for making these homemade plant markers to replace the store-bought ones that are now rusting out.

We’re please to report that about 90% of our milkw**d has made a full comeback (the narrowleaf, that is… the showy is kaput).

We are looking forward to butterfly visitors at Longbay very soon🦋

📣Shout out to Dorothy and John Merik who donated 9 narrowleaf milkw**d plants to Longbay♥️🙌🏻

The Meriks are moving and wanted to “regime” their milkw**d—we are so grateful that they contacted us‼️

If anyone else in Yorba Linda is moving and looking to regime their milkw**d, please consider donating to us or to other groups focused on building butterfly habitats.

Thank you, Meriks!

Thanks also to Brent for digging holes for us ♥️ While he was digging a monarch flew across the Waystation (I wish that I could have snapped a photo but it was too fast).

In the last photo, check out new life as a narrowleaf pokes it’s head out of the ground.

📣Fall Update 🍂🍁Longbay Monarch Waystation #23259

Volunteers took full advantage of our cooler autumn weather and w**ded the Waystation. The narrowleaf and showy milkw**d varieties are still green, for the most part. We are so relieved to have gotten through our sizzling summer… we lost a couple of our native plants, but we have hopes to replace them soon.

Fall is a great time to w**d and to plant in Southern CA!

👩‍🏫Teach Me About These Eggs… Found them on my passion fruit vine…Gulf Frittalary🦋❓

I have spent the last decade or so devote to supporting monarch butterflies, and while I know a lot about them, I know little about Gulfs.

✔️Will ants eat these eggs?
✔️What are the Gulf’s Predators?
✔️How long does it take a caterpillar to grow?

I have so many questions… please tell me one factoid that will help me—I’m back to working full time again and don’t have much time to research the Gulfs…

Thank you♥️

🆘 Please Identify this Caterpillar 🐛 (enjoying Bassia)

Found this guy in Oxnard on property owned by The Nature Conservancy.

Interesting looking. Does anyone know his name?

Look What I Got 👀

Thanks to Susan Woods for showing me this idea. I needed to transplant my 🌱milkw**d from pots 🪴to the earth—except I have little space left in my garden and what space I have offers very poor drainage 💦

I like this raised planter because it comes with a removable plastic roof for when I want to keep monarchs 🦋off my milkw**d.

My husband built it around an existing sprinkler, so that’s a bonus, too!

🎁💝GIFTS‼️

Thanks to my friend Darryl who gifted me not one but TWO showy milkw**d plants! I don’t think that he realized that he also gifted me a caterpillar (seen peeking out from behind a leaf on the woolly-pod milkw**d plant that I purchased from in July).

Just when I thought my caterpillar 🐛 days are over, a gift appears…

Thanks, Darryl♥️

📣August Update: Longbay Monarch Waystation #23259

SMART ASTER A RAY OF HOPE 🌸

Returned home from vacation yesterday and went to check up on Longbay. Yesterday checked in with a balmy 99 degrees.

I cried. Sprinklers down. Several plants dead or struggling.

Then I came upon our smart aster… struggling but belting out a bloom nonetheless. I smiled.

We are grateful 🙏🏻to the Eastlake Village Homeowners Association for giving us this park to build our garden. With water conservation and costs on everyone’s minds, it’s tough to request more consistent watering at Longbay. 💦We do hand water as often as we can. Still… summers in Yorba Linda are brutal—especially this one. Our milkw**d is alive, but not a monarch nor a caterpillar in sight. 🦋

SoCal: How are your waystations faring this summer heat? Are you still seeing monarchs?
