It's Wednesday's ! Is there anything more American than a tall, cold glass of cola? Well, it's sort of American! The word "cola" is the latinized form of the name of the kola nut tree. Native to West Africa, kola is known in several different languages: Temne "kola," Hausa "gōr̃ò," Bambara, "goro," and Madinka "kolo."

The carbonated soft drink we know as cola today was invented in 1886 by former Confederate soldier and pharmacist John Pemberton, who combined the caffeine of the kola nut with coca plant extract and flavored it with vanilla, cinnamon, citrus oils, sugar, and phosphoric acid. He called it "Coca-Cola," after the two active ingredients. It combines ingredients from Africa, Southeast Asia, and Central America into a distinctly American beverage that is now recognized all over the world. The abbreviation "cola" now applies to any soft drink using this combination of flavors, although few beverages today still contain kola nut or coca plant extracts.
