Today we honor and remember NYPD Chief Steve Silks of Patrol Borough Queens North who died by su***de on 6/5/2019

Chief Silks began his 39 year career in 1980, his dedication and commitment to the city of NY had been steadfast. Silks is a 9/11 first responder & was 2nd in command of heavy weapons training at the academy in wake of that tragic day. We were told Chief Silks was an avid outdoorsman, a marathoner, had climbed Mount Everest & even biked coast to coast. A die hard yankee fan that grew to love the mets because of working in Queens. A well-accomplished & hardworking individual who truly gave all of himself to the job.

Thank you Chief Silks for your 39 years of service to The City of New York.. You were a friend & mentor to many during your time & for that we are forever grateful!

“It is not how he died that matters, rather how he lived” .. many often feel that because someone died by su***de they are less of an officer than someone who died in the line of duty.. That is not true- We need to break the stigma surrounding Su***de and mental health in law enforcement. What we see & deal with in this career mentally takes a toll on people, mix that with everyday life & it becomes heavy.

Bridgeport emergency management holds active shooter simulation at Meadowbrook Mall

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) - Bridgeport Emergency Management held a multi-agency active shooter simulation at Meadowbrook Mall on Sunday evening after the mall closed for the day.

The exercise included members of the Bridgeport Police Department, the Bridgeport Fire Department and the Harrison/Taylor 911 Center. Employees from stores within the mall also participated, acting as victims in the simulation.

The organization holds simulation exercises once every three years, with each taking up to a year to plan.

Tim Curry, director of emergency management for the city of Bridgeport, said the exercises are important for building relationships before a real crisis occurs.

“It’s all about working together and knowing each other. The first time that you are in one of these stores or interacting with security, the mall admin staff, you don’t want that to be when something real is going on so we prioritize building and fostering those relationships beforehand so that we all know each other and can work together,” Curry said.

Meadowbrook Mall will open at its normal time Monday morning

Teens charged in NYC bomb attempt wanted to surpass Boston Marathon terror attack, prosecutors say

NEW YORK (WPIX) – Two ISIS-inspired men accused of trying to detonate bombs at New York City protests wanted to cause a terror attack bigger than the Boston Marathon, according to federal prosecutors.

Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, were arrested on Saturday for allegedly throwing two homemade IEDs near Gracie Mansion on the Upper East Side on Saturday, police said. The devices had triacetone triperoxide (TATP), an explosive material used in multiple terrorist attacks over the last decade, officials said.

The suspects came from Pennsylvania to New York City and allegedly told investigators they planned to execute an ISIS-inspired attack when they were taken into custody, according to the complaint.

On Saturday, more than 100 protesters from “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City” and “Run N***s Out of New York City” clashed near Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Gracie Mansion residence at East End Avenue, authorities said.

The defendants arrived in New York City at 11:30 a.m. and parked on East End Avenue at 12:05 p.m. The alleged attack started 45 minutes later, authorities said.

Investigators said Balat allegedly lit and threw a device, sending smoke and flames flying through the air. Kayumi allegedly had another device that he handed to Balat, who threw it close to NYPD officers, prosecutors said. The men were two of the six people arrested at the protests.

The bomb squad found an explosive device in a black car parked on East End Avenue between East 81st and 82nd streets on Sunday, police said.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said a third device was found in a Black 2010 Honda with New Jersey plates. Using a robot, the NYPD bomb squad was able to find the device, and the materials inside the car were consistent with the two other IEDs. The materials are being examined by the FBI.

Police described one of the devices as a smoking object containing nuts, bolts, screws, and a “hobby fuse.” The device extinguished itself steps from police officers, Tisch said.

“Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi have been charged with committing a heinous act of terrorism and proclaiming their allegiance to ISIS. They should be held fully accountable for their actions. We will continue to keep New Yorkers safe. We will not tolerate terrorism or violence in our city,” said Mamdani, who was not at Gracie Mansion during the protests.

Balat and Kayumi were charged with attempted provision of material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization, use of a weapon of mass destruction, transportation of explosive materials, interstate transportation and receipt of explosives, and unlawful possession of destructive devices, prosecutors said.

The suspects will be arraigned in Manhattan Federal Court on Monday. Information for their attorneys was not immediately available.

NYPD detective who named K9 dog after hero dad killed in line of duty is promoted: ‘I think he would be proud’

An NYPD detective who named her K9 dog after her father — who was killed in the line of duty nearly 30 years ago — was promoted Friday as she told The Post her slain hero dad would be “proud.”

Katrina J. Narvaez, 38, was one of 11 members of New York’s Finest promoted to detective second-grade at a One Police Plaza ceremony presided over by Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Narvaez was just 9 years old when her dad, Lt. Frederico Narvaez, was fatally shot while responding to a domestic incident in Flatbush on Oct. 18, 1996.

“I think [my dad] would be proud,” said Narvaez, who is married and expecting a child of her own – her first. “He was proud of his position in the NYPD and being around other cops and taking care of them.”

But it wasn’t until after her father’s death that she got to know his family in blue, who shared stories about him and showed her what it meant to protect and serve New Yorkers, she said.
