National Geographic 33 changemaker and National Geographic Explorer Samuel Ramsey is sequencing the genomes of every honeybee species to combat parasitic mites that threaten global food production. He has led expeditions in the Philippines and Thailand in search of their native pollinators, and further bee-seeking expeditions loom.

The tiniest hives with the biggest job 🐝👑

This time of year we’re setting out our baby nucs! These mini beehives are designed to hatch a queen bee and give her a home before she heads out on her sole mating flight.

Each group is carefully placed with every hive facing a different direction. Small details helps the queen recognize her own home when she returns from the sky.

During nuc season our team places thousands of these every single day. Each one holds the start of a future colony and another strong queen for the field.

Small boxes. Big purpose. And a whole lot of bees. 🌼🐝
