Scouts, let’s all stand straight, with our heads held high, and look at the flag in the stand behind me.
Every time we gather as a pack, we begin by saying the Scout Oath. We promise to do our duty to God and our country. Today, we are here to talk about what it means when we say those words.
This weekend, people all over America are having backyard barbecues, swimming, and enjoying time with their families. That is a great thing! But Memorial Day isn't just a day for hot dogs and chili and a day off from school. It is a very important day of remembrance.
Memorial Day is the day we set aside to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives while serving in our military. These are the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice so that you and I can live in a free country. They left their homes, their families, and their normal lives to protect our freedom, and they never made it back.
As Scouts, we are taught to be reverent and to show respect. When you see a grave with an American flag, or when we participate in a flag ceremony, or place wreaths in December, remember that each of those flags represents a real person who gave everything for you.
How can we honor them? We honor them by doing our best to be good citizens, by being kind to others, and by living our lives in a way that makes our country proud.
So, as you enjoy this weekend, and our chili cook off, remember the true reason for this holiday. Say a quick 'thank you' in your heart for the heroes who protected our freedom.
Thank you, and let’s always remember.
