At VFW Auxiliary National Headquarters, we've received a number of questions about our Scholarships and Programs, one of which keeps coming up: "Why can't I find information about Illustrating America under Scholarships in MALTA or on the VFW Auxiliary website?"

The answer is... it's not a scholarship! Illustrating America is a contest for students in grades K-8. The top three National winners in each grade category (K-2, 3-5, 6-8) are each awarded a gift card, not a scholarship, and this contest was created in 2019-2020 by the then-National Youth Activities Ambassador, therefore, information about it can be found under Youth Activities.

We admit, this can be confusing - especially because both of our art scholarships have "contest" in the name, and because the VFW's Patriot's Pen is an "annual youth essay contest," according to their description, but we report all three of those under Scholarships, along with Continuing Education and the VFW Voice of Democracy.

But it may help to remember that Illustrating America is the only one of these contests that allows kindergarten through fifth graders to enter, and, unlike their teen and tween siblings, these kiddos aren't looking all the way ahead to college yet.

🚨 WE NEED YOUR HELP TO KEEP THE VETERANS CUP ON THE CALENDAR! 🇺🇸⛳

We've heard from so many people who have told us they already have a team together and are planning to play...and we couldn't be more excited!

Now we just need you to REGISTER.

Our deadline to submit player numbers to the golf course is August 13, and right now we don't have enough registered teams to move forward. Without enough registrations by that date, we will unfortunately have to cancel the tournament.

On June 6, 1944, thousands of brave Allied service members stepped onto the beaches of Normandy, facing unimaginable fear with courage, duty, and sacrifice.

D-Day reminds us that freedom has never been free. It was carried on the shoulders of young men who left home, crossed an ocean, and gave everything so others could live in liberty.

Today, we pause to remember their bravery, honor their sacrifice, and thank God for those who stood in the gap for generations they would never meet.

May we never forget the courage shown on those beaches, the lives lost, and the freedom preserved.

✨️Memorial Day began after the Civil War as Decoration Day. On May 30, 1868, Americans were called to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers as a way to honor those who had given their lives in service to our country. Over time, Decoration Day became what we now know as Memorial Day, and in 1971 it became a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May.

This weekend is not simply the beginning of summer. It is a sacred time to pause, remember, and honor the brave men and women who paid the ultimate price for our freedom, along with the families who still carry that loss.

Be blessed as you remember this Memorial Day.

We may not know them all, but we owe them all. 🇺🇸
