What a great evening introducing the Casco Bay Trail to the Maine Outdoor Adventure Club! 🌲🥾

CBTA Co-President Emma Bond spoke to nearly 50 enthusiastic MOAC members in Portland tonight, sharing the vision for the trail and what’s happening as the Casco Bay Trail continues to take shape.

The group brought lots of great questions, curiosity, and enthusiasm—exactly the kind of energy we love to see from people who enjoy exploring Maine’s outdoors!

On September 28, Cumberland’s Town Council voted to provide $12,000 toward the local match for a preliminary design study on a portion of Casco Bay Trail. Portland, Falmouth, Yarmouth, and Casco Bay Trail Alliance are also each contributing $12,000.

Yes, we keep saying it, but this really is yet another big step forward. Thank you, thank you, to all CBT supporters out there!

Big news: Casco Bay Trail Alliance has been awarded a 2026 Trail Grant from Rails to Trails Conservancy ls! Our will help pay for the preliminary engineering study of the Portland to Yarmouth segment of Casco Bay Trail. Get the full story on the CBTA website:

Yesterday’s Portland Press Herald covered the latest advances on the Casco Bay Trail. Thank you to all who made this progress possible. Community support is essential to the next step – an MDOT engineering study for the first segment of the trail, 90% of which would be paid by state and federal funds.

More support for Casco Bay Trail! 👏 On Monday night, the town of Falmouth approved a $12,000 local match for the proposed engineering study of the Portland-Yarmouth section.

We’re grateful to all who contacted town leaders, sent public comments, and spoke up at town meetings in favor of the trail. Your voices continue to make a difference!

Big decisions are pending in Yarmouth and Cumberland. We’ll keep you posted on the schedule. In the meantime, please reach out to your town leaders in support of the trail and highlight the advantage of the additional information the engineering study will provide for all.

Last year was Maine’s worst on record for pedestrian and cyclist traffic accidents, with nearly 30 deaths. Portland alone saw nearly 80 crashes and fatalities in 2025.

Casco Bay Trail–a proposed 72-mile pathway that would separate bikers and walkers from automotive traffic–could help change this.

Consider Hoboken, N.J., a city comparable in size to Portland that has not had a traffic fatality since 2017. That remarkable statistic is in part due to investments in infrastructure—including biking and walking pathways like the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, the Green Circuit, and a protected bikeway connecting Hoboken to Jersey City—that also led to a significant drop in injuries.

This week we’re celebrating Casco Bay Trail Alliance board member Aitana Blevins, who completed the Trek Across Maine cross Maine, a 180-mile cycling event and fundraising for the American Lung Association, last weekend.

Aitana was one of 824 participants to enjoy Maine’s gorgeous landscapes, which traveled through many of the communities on the route of the proposed Casco Bay Trail. Wouldn’t it be great if the Trek could leave the roads and follow the CBT?

More exciting progress! Last night, the city of Portland and the town of North Yarmouth both approved signing the Casco Bay Trail Board of Supervisors Interlocal Agreement: https://cascobaytrail.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/auburn-signed_cbta-interlocal-agreement_5.5.26-1.pdf.

That means six municipalities are now part of a new regional advisory group that will help plan the trail—from north to south: Auburn, New Gloucester, North Yarmouth, Yarmouth, Falmouth, and Portland.

Portland took another big step forward by supporting a resolution to provide a $12,000 local match to the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) for an engineering study of the Portland-to-Yarmouth portion of the trail.

We couldn’t be more pleased about these advances. Thank you to everyone who has spoken up for the trail in their city or town!

June 1 brought a double dose of good news, as the towns of New Gloucester and Falmouth both approved signing the Casco Bay Trail Interlocal Agreement. They join Auburn and Yarmouth on a regional group to collaborate on planning the Casco Bay Trail!
