It’s the season for appreciation of hidden treasures! Here’s Margaret Ahmed of Nigeria, who leads Homemakers, a charity that assists youth in recovery and trains women in skills that can add to their family income. Homemakers is a recent Lydia awardee and today Margaret received the Hadarat Global Business Innovation Leadership Award!

We give God thanks for her life and bless her labor!

After 7 years of working with nonprofits, there are some basic tips we can share that might be helpful if you're a small nonprofit or faith-based organization. I'm interested in your thoughts too, so please feel free to provide feedback.

1. PRAY FOR YOUR FUNDRAISING STRATEGY. Everything - all the money, all the resources, all the skills - come from God. Therefore it is logical to ask Him for the strategy you will use to raise money. He has a plan for funding His assignments, and it's our part to discover that plan. Every method won't work for everyone, which is why prayer is so important.

2. APPLY FOR A GRANT THAT FITS YOUR MISSION, DON'T TRY TO FIT YOUR MISSION TO THE GRANT OPPORTUNITY. The most significant stumbling block to obtaining grants that I've observed is the tendency on the part of grant applicants to try to fit their mission to the grant, instead of looking for a grantor that has an interest in the same area as they do. If you've never had an interest in saving the whales, it is usually a waste of time and effort to pursue a grant from an organization that wants its funds dedicated to the welfare of whales!

3. IF YOU WOULDN'T GIVE YOUR MONEY TO THAT CAUSE, DON'T BE SURPRISED THAT NO ONE ELSE WILL. If your cause is not well thought out you may appear irresponsible, spendthrift or untruthful. All of these are "red flag" reasons for a reviewer to say No. Remember, grants are not free money, Someone has to be accountable for how grants are made, and you the receiver will also be accountable for how they are spent.
