2025 NOAA Monitoring: By the Numbers

Spearhead Project Earth continues building the scientific side of our mission through NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration’s Marine Debris Monitoring and Assessment Project (MDMAP).

Led by SPE Environmental Scientist Jasper Millman, with guidance and support from Zach Nemec of Pennsylvania Sea Grant, our 2025 monitoring included:

• 11 monitoring events completed
• 1,452 debris items documented
• 12 community scientists trained
• 31 volunteer hours dedicated to monitoring

Using standardized NOAA protocols, we document the types, quantities and locations of debris found along the Delaware River. The data helps us better understand pollution trends over time while contributing to broader marine debris research.

We’re continuing to expand environmental monitoring, data collection and hands-on community science throughout the watershed.

Our School Garden Program continues to grow! Spearhead Project Earth’s Jade Michalowski has been working with Pennsbury School District staff and local Master Gardeners, her recent focus is supporting the gardens at Oxford Valley and Afton Elementary Schools.

Exciting progress includes connecting garden planning with STEM curriculum, securing 200 daffodil bulbs for Oxford Valley through Bucks Beautiful, and pursuing additional grants and donations.

We’re proud to continue working with our partners at Pennsbury School District to build outdoor spaces where students can learn, explore, and connect with nature.

Our Environmental Science Lead, Jasper Millman expanded our NOAA Marine Debris Monitoring and Assessment Project (MDMAP) efforts to a third monitoring site at Cove Nature Park.

As our mapping program continues to grow, we’ll be adding even more monitoring locations to strengthen the scientific data that supports restoration, conservation, and long-term stewardship throughout the Delaware River watershed.

A special thank you to Zach Nemec, Pennsylvania Sea Grant, and the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for your continued guidance and support as we expand this important work.

It was a privilege to join Pennsbury School District for the ribbon cutting of the Oxford Valley Elementary Outdoor Learning Garden and Classroom and celebrate everyone who made this project possible.

Thank you to STEM teacher Cheryl Demusz, whose vision and dedication transformed an unused courtyard into an outdoor learning garden and classroom where students will learn and grow for years to come. We’re also grateful to the Pennsbury School District and Superintendent Dr. Tom Smith for their support and partnership throughout the project.

A special thank you to former Pennsbury students Jade Michalowski for managing the project and Connor Kearney for overseeing the work and helping bring Cheryl’s vision to life.

This garden is one of 11 outdoor learning gardens and classrooms planned through our partnership with the Pennsbury School District, Spearhead Project Earth is excited to continue creating outdoor spaces where students can learn, explore, and connect with nature. Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this project a reality. We can’t wait to watch the gardens grow alongside the students who will use them!

Science in Action: Mapping Our Shorelines for NOAA

Did you know that before marine debris can be effectively monitored, each shoreline must first be carefully mapped and characterized?

At Spearhead Project Earth, we’re proud that our Lead Environmental Scientist, Jasper Millman, works alongside Zach Nemec, Coastal Outreach Specialist with Pennsylvania Sea Grant, on the NOAA Marine Debris Monitoring and Assessment Project (MDMAP).

Together, they map and characterize standardized 100-meter monitoring 3 separate sites by documenting shoreline features, recording GPS coordinates, and identifying habitat characteristics that provide the foundation for long-term marine debris research.

The data collected helps NOAA better understand where marine debris accumulates, how it moves through our waterways, and where restoration efforts can make the greatest impact.

We’re grateful for Jasper’s scientific leadership and our continued partnership with Pennsylvania Sea Grant and NOAA. Together, we’re not only removing debris but helping build the science that protects our waterways for future generations.

Violet daughter of Spearhead Project Earth Secretary, Board of Trustees Jacqueline Moock Costa stepped in to help scout the location for tomorrow’s big volunteer outing with Johnson & Johnson!

Violet discovered a frog because every good expedition comes with a wildlife sighting.

Ace thought Captain Robert Catalano was leaving without him and was not okay with it.

We’re excited to welcome our volunteers tomorrow for a great day of stewardship and teamwork!

🌎 Volunteers Needed This Friday! 🌎

Join Spearhead Project Earth this Friday, June 12, from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at Palmyra Cove Nature Park as we kick off our summer shoreline cleanup series!

Help protect the Delaware River watershed by removing litter and debris from the shoreline while learning about local ecosystems, pollution prevention, and environmental stewardship.

Last week, Spearhead Project Earth (SPE) teamed up with our friends at Dow for another successful cleanup effort along the Delaware River shorelines.

Together, our volunteers collected approximately 400 pounds of trash from the shoreline of Newbold Island in Bordentown, NJ, with the majority consisting of single-use plastic bottles and other common plastic waste that would otherwise remain in the environment.

A special thank you to Justin Land at Dow for his continued support of SPE and for helping drive so many of the environmental initiatives that make these outings possible. We are also incredibly grateful to all of the additional volunteers who donated their time and energy to help make a real impact.

Every bottle removed, every bag collected, and every volunteer who shows up helps create a cleaner and healthier future for our communities and waterways.

We are making a difference, one cleanup at a time.

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting another educational VIP boat tour to Burlington Island.

A special thank you to Candy Chappell for organizing this day with us exploring one of the Delaware River’s most unique natural treasures.

What made the visit especially meaningful was hearing that several participants had lived in Burlington their entire lives but had never actually had the opportunity to set foot on the island. For many, Burlington Island has always been a familiar landmark viewed from shore, but experiencing it firsthand is something entirely different.

Together we explored the island, shared stories about its history, enjoyed its natural beauty, and experienced a place that holds a special connection to the Burlington community.

Moments like these remind us why preservation, education, and community engagement are so important. We are grateful for the opportunity to help more people discover and appreciate Burlington Island.

Together with nearly 30 volunteers from our partners at It's Better Outdoors (IBO), Spearhead Project Earth and IBO removed nearly 800 pounds of debris from the shoreline and surrounding areas!

From kayaks on the water to cleanup crews along the shoreline, everyone came ready to work and make a real impact. The energy, teamwork, and dedication throughout the day were amazing to see! Every cleanup helps protect wildlife, improve our waterways, and keep trash from moving further downstream.

A special thank you John Judy, Volunteer Engagement Lead from SPE for organizing and leading his passion project and to Michael Gawbill, Chair of the Riverton Environmental Commission, for being an incredible partner and volunteer, and capturing amazing photos and drone footage throughout the day.
