Rest in Peace…

Father John O'Shea, 96, a senior priest of the Diocese of Yakima in residence at Prestige Assisted Living in Richland, died peacefully at 10:45 p.m. last night (August 27). He had recently been treated for pneumonia. We are very grateful for the accompaniment he received from parishioners, deacons and priests in recent days as he spiritually prepared for death. "When will I have it all?" he asked a recent visitor. He knew the answer, of course. "Whether we live or we die, we are the Lord's" (Romans 14:8).

An obituary and funeral arrangements will be announced next week. As we pray for the repose of his soul, let's also pray for all our dying and deceased friends, family, loved ones, parishioners and clients.

El padre John O'Shea, de 96 años, sacerdote veterano de la Diócesis de Yakima residente en el centro Prestige Assisted Living de Richland, falleció pacíficamente anoche (27 de agosto) a las 10:45 p. m. Recientemente había recibido tratamiento por neumonía. Estamos muy agradecidos por el acompañamiento que recibió de feligreses, diáconos y sacerdotes en los últimos días, mientras se preparaba espiritualmente para la muerte. "¿Cuándo lo tendré todo?", preguntó a una persona que lo visitó hace poco. Él conocía la respuesta, por supuesto: "Si vivimos, para el Señor vivimos; y si morimos, para el Señor morimos" (Romanos 14:8).

La próxima semana se anunciarán la nota necrológica y los detalles de las exequias. Mientras oramos por el eterno descanso de su alma, oremos también por todos nuestros amigos, familiares, seres queridos, feligreses y clientes que están agonizando o que ya han fallecido.

The Diocese of Spokane asks the faithful and the entire community to join in prayer for all those impacted by the Old Trails Fire, Fairview Fire, and other active wildfires throughout our region. We also pray for the safety and protection of firefighters, law enforcement, emergency personnel, and volunteers serving those in need.

Individuals and families affected by the fires are encouraged to follow Spokane County Emergency Management for the most current information regarding evacuations, shelter locations, road closures, and public safety updates.

Today is the Feast of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, known as the Lily of the Mohawks. She is the first Indigenous American to be canonized as a saint. She was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on Oct. 21, 2012. She is the patroness of Native Americans, ecology and the environment, and people in exile.

May we model her complete reliance on Christ. St. Kateri Tekakwitha, pray for us!
