Tanvi’s first job, as a teen, was working at a dance bar. She hadn’t wanted that work, but her parents’ death left her with only two options: to dance or watch her brother starve.
After the dance bar, it was prostitution; then she was some stranger’s “personal lady.”
Amidst her pain, she received an invitation to work at a micro-business, a partner of Women At Risk, International (WAR, Int’l). She would no longer have to work with shame; she would be proud of her work.
Today, Tanvi spends her mornings going to school & the afternoons working in the micro-bakery & craft program. She loves her new job cooking up treats & crafting beautiful jewelry. But what she loves most is that she can now support herself & her brother in an honorable way.
WAR, Int’l and our partners find women where they are at, whether it’s in the slums, in the red-light districts, or in an abusive situation. Inviting them into a safe community and dignified work, they teach them to provide for themselves and their families, to know their own worth, and to live with confidence.
