In this episode of AFTHtv, Liv McNulty shares her experience as an international adoptee from China, adopted at 13 months old. She reflects on growing up with adoption as an open part of her story, navigating questions and assumptions from the outside world, and why she's pursuing genetic testing to learn more about her medical history. Liv also discusses the importance of honoring an adoptee's identity, how she decides when it's worth educating others who ask insensitive or uninformed questions about her life, and when it's okay to simply not take on that role. She also shares how her personal journey sparked an interest in China's One-Child Policy, ultimately leading her to a career in therapy. Join us next week when Liv shares more about her role as an adoption competent therapist.

In our latest episode of AFTHtv, we sat with Jake and Matt to hear their story of waiting for "the call" as adoptive parents. Waiting for an extended period of time for placement, which for Jake and Matt ultimately was 3 years, has ups and downs. Sometimes it is difficult to let go and trust the process. When "the call" finally happens, the next few days can feel like a whirlwind, reminding adoptive parents of all the work that was put into making an adoption placement happen.

After exploring family-building options, Jake and Matt were drawn to adoption through AFTH after seeing friends have positive experiences with Adoptions From The Heart and wanting an open adoption with strong social work support. The education and home study process helped prepare them for what to expect, though the paperwork and six-month journey to becoming “live” was extensive. They share honestly about the emotional challenge of waiting and how their social worker helped them navigate that time. Their story continues with the unforgettable “call,” a recent placement, and the meaningful journey ahead, including an upcoming connection with their child’s birth parents.

Late placement as a birth mother may be less common, but it is not a choice that carries any less love. 💜

In our latest episode of AFTHtv, birth mother Cienna speaks about her experience working with AFTH for a late placement adoption after parenting for 6 months. Choosing to place your child after parenting is talked about less, which can create a stigma or taboo for birth parents to navigate. AFTH is there to support birth parents without judgement if placing your child after parenting is ultimately the best for the child.

Speaking to your child about adoption and their birth family can seem intimidating, but it's important to wonder with your child. 💜

If your child has questions about their adoption story that you cannot answer, wonder about the possibilities with them. Listen when they express what they wish they knew. And most importantly, try not to make any promises about their birth family that you don't know for sure are true. Encouraging openness makes tough conversations about adoption easier for both you and your child.
