Tabitha USA

Tabitha USA In 2003, Cathy Caldwell traveled to Cambodia and met Janne Ritskes, Tabitha’s founder and director.

This was the official page for Tabitha USA, formed to support the charity Tabitha Cambodia, which ceased operations in 2022 after many years making a real difference in the lives of thousands of Cambodian children and families. To find a way to encourage more Americans to support the work in Cambodia, Cathy returned to Indiana and founded Tabitha USA as an official IRS 501(c)(3) organizat

ion, so that donations could be tax-exempt. Tabitha USA now has an executive board of four volunteers around the country, who manage its day-to-day operations. An advisory board includes many active volunteers who support fundraising efforts, sell cottage goods, and find other ways to support Tabitha programs. Statement from the current Board President:
For more than twenty years, I have worked as a staff member and volunteer with non-profit organizations in the United States and Singapore. In all my experience, I have never encountered an organization as efficient, effective and far-reaching as Tabitha Cambodia. Its work is inspiring to volunteers all over the world, to the Khmer staff who work diligently to help their countrymen, and most of all, to the families in Tabitha's Savings Program, whose lives are forever changed for the better.

Dear Tabitha USA friends,

Please see below for a very important letter from Director Janne Ritskes about Tabitha Cambodia, and Tabitha's plan to close operations in 2022.

This news naturally and directly affects us at Tabitha USA, since we exist to support Tabitha Cambodia. In order to align the timing of our closure with that of Cambodia's, we will close Tabitha USA to donations on September 30, 2022. Until that time, we are open to contributions and will wire all funds to Cambodia as we have always done in the past. After September 30, we will no longer be able to accept donations, as we prepare to close our operations in the U.S.

Over the next few months, we will send you several reminders about this donation deadline. For now, we want to sincerely thank you for the years of life-changing support for Cambodian families, and for your kind support of our efforts over the decades.

The Board of Tabitha USA

June 2022

Dear friends and partners,

I write to you today to share with you the closing of Tabitha Cambodia in December of this year. It’s a decision that Heng and I have made this past week. The decision was made for two main reasons:

First, Cambodia’s development is at an amazing pace and the deep poverty which existed when I arrived in 1992 is no longer there. In January we had talked about closing. We re-evaluated our baseline for families and chose to redefine our work with upper poor and lower middle class with the poorest being less than 4% of our population.

Secondly, we have directly impacted more than a quarter of the current population. Our achievements have been many. The senior staff of Tabitha have been with us for more than 20 years and they are reaching an age where many will retire over the next two years. Heng and I decided that now would be the best time to close down.

It has been a 28 year journey – a life-time working with the peoples of Cambodia. We will close our doors in December of this year. Our final celebration will be in early January with a final housebuilding team of all who would like to come and celebrate with us, and to close with a final dinner along with the staff. I will be in Cambodia for September and October to assist with the closing and return in late December for our final time together as Tabitha Cambodia.

I don't have the words to express my deep gratitude to each of you for your generosity all these years. I can assure you that each of you have impacted our people for many years to come. We are committed to finishing all our commitments to you and all our donors. Houses and wells will continue to be built with the money received. Your gifts have been life transforming for hundreds of thousands of people here.

Personally, I am deeply humbled and grateful to my God for allowing me the privilege of working in Cambodia. I am thankful to my God for each of you who have stood with us in this journey.

I am hoping that you might be able to come and see what we have done together before we close.

In deep humbleness and thanksgiving,

Janne Ritskes

Letter from Janne about the final house build in January 2023…

June 2022,

Dear friends and partners,

Good morning. I would like to take a moment and thank so very many of you who have responded to the news of Tabitha Cambodia closing. I am so very humbled by the impact Tabitha has had on so many of you. Your kind words and thoughts have touched my soul.

Today I would like to share about our final housebuilding that will take place in Cambodia from January 4 through January 8 when we will have our final dinner together in Cambodia. This is a draft schedule for now. Jan 4: Orientation. Jan 5 and 6: House building. (Location yet to be determined) It depends on where we build if need the extra for travelling. Jan 8: Farewell Party in Phnom Penh

Everyone will be building in one site. This will allow time for all of us to get to know each other and to allow me time for each of you. It is a celebration and being together will allow the celebration to happen.

In order to begin the logistics of this final house build, I would ask that everyone who plans to attend confirm their attendance with myself and Tabitha Cambodia no later than September 1, 2022. The goal is to have each party (couple or family group) raise enough for one house which is $1700 USD. Singles - half a house.

As usual, everyone is required to book their own flights, hotel accommodations etc. Tabitha Cambodia will look after travel to and from the build sites, food on site, accommodations on site, and water for the house building days. The cost of this will be divided evenly amongst all participants. The cost of the final dinner will be divided evenly amongst all attendees.

We look forward to seeing you in Cambodia. Please do confirm with myself and Heng, your intention to come. Donations for the houses can be received by foundations. I am so thankful to my God for this event and look forward to giving each of you a hug.

Confirmation of attendance must be sent to Tabitha Cambodia: [email protected] or [email protected] And to Janne Ritskes at [email protected] .

In her February 2020 letter to friends and partners, Tabitha founder Janne Ritskes reflects on her recent visit to villages in Romae Heck in Svay Rieng Province: The once dry fallow land is turning into "a sea of emerald green" thanks to new wells installed with Tabitha's support, and families have started raising crayfish and catfish. When Tabitha started working with these families, Janne writes, "life was very harsh — huts were homes, eating each day a struggle. Now homes are being rebuilt and people are busy, busy doing the myriad of things to bring about a better life... I marvel at how much has changed for these families, how they are families now with husbands and wives working together. I marvel at how when we first met those years ago, the women could not even look me in the face – that’s what poverty doe, it destroys people's sense of self-worth. How far had we come together over these past 5 years – how good that is!" Read Janne's letter here: https://tabitha-cambodia.org/news/index/247
