Fred and Fran decided to stop by and visit Henry Witcher's poultry project. Henry is a senior Cross County 4-H youth. As part of his project he is hatching eggs. Fred and Fran got the see the eggs in the incubator. A few chicks had already hatched and more had pipped. When a chick first breaks the egg shell, but hasn't made it out yet, that is called pipping. It's natural to want to help the help get free, but they need to work their way out of the shell unassisted. Much like a butterfly coming out of a cocoon, it's best to let the animal finish the process. Chicken eggs take 21 days to hatch. That means for 21 days, Henry has checked the incubator several times each day to ensure that the temperature was correct and humidity stayed at the proper level.
