LSRA has the best volunteers. 👏 Our Water Watchdogs volunteers have wrapped up another season of bacteria monitoring. Because of their diligence and committment we were able to provide safety reports for public waterways all summer long. We are grateful for their water stewardship. 💦

Pam Lazos, our Board of Directors Chair, has been busy writing and editing for The International Journal for Water Equity and Justice. Published in collaboration with the Climate Leaders at Penn, a graduate fellowship program at the University of Pennsylvania focused on advancing climate leadership, policy, and innovation, Volume 11 of the Journal continues to bring diverse perspectives to one of the world’s most persistent challenges: equitable access to clean water. One of Pam’s articles highlights the history of Conowingo Dam and our steadfast advocacy to make sure the Dam is licensed with proper conditions to protect water quality and aquatic species. The Agencies propose to redefine terms AGAIN which would cause federal protection to be lost for many wetlands and streams throughout the US. The real reason? So that it's easier to bypass Clean Water Act Section 404 permitting to pave paradise and put up a parking lot. By redefining terms ‘‘relatively permanent’’ and ‘‘continuous surface connection,’’ and adding a definition of the term ‘‘perennial," they have changed the language to make wetland protection essentially nonexistent if it is not connected to a stream or river through surface water connection along with other consequences not bounded by science or economics. We strongly disagree with the agencies proposed rulemaking and submitted comments last Friday in opposition.

Cleanup CANCELED!

In an unexpected turn of events, we’ll be canceling the Codorus Creek cleanup scheduled for September 20th. Earlier this week, we were notified that PennDOT was working to remove trash and woody debris from the section of the creek we had planned to tackle during Sunday’s cleanup. While we’re certainly grateful that the Codorus is no longer flowing with trash, it also means there’s nothing left for us to clean up! Unfortunately, given the timing of PennDOT’s work, we haven’t had enough time to pivot to another cleanup site.

We apologize for the change in plans but thank you to all who expressed interest in lending a hand. Please share this cancellation notice so word gets out and people don’t still show up on Sunday.
