For the last three years, the Senior Winning Capstone Team from UNCW's Coastal Engineering Program has presented at the NCBIWA spring meeting. Layton Bedsole, New Hanover County's first shore protection coordinator (aka Sandman), was the first recipient of the Tom Jarrett Hero of the Coast Award. This award is presented in great admiration to an individual/organization that has demonstrated determination, leadership, passion, and courage in serving to further the NCBIWA mission of protecting and preserving the coast of North Carolina. Tom Jarrett, a hero of the coast in his own right, passed away earlier this year.
