Dovetail and Duluth Folk School are happy to house a copy of Duluth's "Bronze" award from the League of American Bicyclists, for being a Bicycle Friendly Community.
Dovetail / Duluth Folk School are some of many businesses, organizations, and families in Duluth that are improved by our relation to cyclists and assets like the Traverse and Lakewalk/Cross City Trail.
More than half of all staff at Dovetail bike to work in the summer (in large part thanks to Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota's e-bike program), and Duluth Folk School is made up of many present and former bike mechanics. Every week, musicians show up to jams and people to events by bike, sometimes lugging an upright bass in a bike trailer.
A bronze award recognizes some of Duluth's real community achievements in cycling programming, education, and culture. It's something that Duluth can receive recognition in, and is worth investing in.
However, that recognition also cuts both ways. Anyone who has tried biking in Duluth knows there is something ironic to any award. It's stressful to bike in Duluth!
Once you leave the eastern, central, and western portions of the Lakewalk, it's easy to see why most other rankings that focus solely on practical mobility place Duluth near the bottom of all cities -- not just nationally, but in Minnesota as well.
Even so, we want to cheer the thousands of cyclists in Duluth: the parents who teach and encourage their kids, the volunteers at school bike rodeos; the commuters, teachers, and mechanics; the trailbuilders, high school mountain bike teams, and trail donors; the advocates and businesses; the engineers and politicians who dream of safe streets for everyone. Here's to you and all your good work!
