Dovetail and Duluth Folk School are happy to house a copy of Duluth's "Bronze" award from the League of American Bicyclists, for being a Bicycle Friendly Community.

Dovetail / Duluth Folk School are some of many businesses, organizations, and families in Duluth that are improved by our relation to cyclists and assets like the Traverse and Lakewalk/Cross City Trail.

More than half of all staff at Dovetail bike to work in the summer (in large part thanks to Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota's e-bike program), and Duluth Folk School is made up of many present and former bike mechanics. Every week, musicians show up to jams and people to events by bike, sometimes lugging an upright bass in a bike trailer.

A bronze award recognizes some of Duluth's real community achievements in cycling programming, education, and culture. It's something that Duluth can receive recognition in, and is worth investing in.

However, that recognition also cuts both ways. Anyone who has tried biking in Duluth knows there is something ironic to any award. It's stressful to bike in Duluth!

Once you leave the eastern, central, and western portions of the Lakewalk, it's easy to see why most other rankings that focus solely on practical mobility place Duluth near the bottom of all cities -- not just nationally, but in Minnesota as well.

Even so, we want to cheer the thousands of cyclists in Duluth: the parents who teach and encourage their kids, the volunteers at school bike rodeos; the commuters, teachers, and mechanics; the trailbuilders, high school mountain bike teams, and trail donors; the advocates and businesses; the engineers and politicians who dream of safe streets for everyone. Here's to you and all your good work!

All across Minnesota, cities and businesses are taking the steps to be better for the millions of Minnesotans who get around by bicycle.

And when our communities are better and safer to bike in, everyone benefits!

We are proud to continue to champion the League of American Bicyclists Bike Friendly America program. If you are interested in learning more, reach out at [email protected]

Lyndale Ave's reconstruction effort has been getting a lot of press. A small group of business owners are pushing for higher design speeds, worse transit access, and less safety for bicyclists.

Eric Roper of the Star Tribune walks through the realities and how the solution to business woes is better institutional support through the length of the reconstruction timeframes, not the elimination of better infrastructure from the design.

The overhaul of a key south Minneapolis artery will make it more pleasant to visit. But we can’t afford to have construction kill small businesses.

Vehicle bloat is a terrifying reality on our roadways. An escalating arms race where everyone loses, especially those outside of the vehicles.

The vehicles on American roads have grown larger — and they are killing thousands more pedestrians, a Times investigation found.

Even in a state as great for biking as ours, every day bike riders are still forced to practice hyper-vigilance in order to compensate for the negligence of drivers.

Happy Juneteenth, a day of celebration and of recognition of the true date when chattel slavery ended in America and a critical part of our national story!

Every year, BikeMN offers Juneteenth as paid time off for our team to go volunteer in historically Black communities. The majority of our team in the metro help with a phenomenal event called the Soul of the Southside Juneteenth festival which occurs just a few blocks north of our office.

The Southside neighborhood in Minneapolis was a vibrant and stable, predominantly African American community that existed from the 1930s to the 1970s. During this time, many parts of the Twin Cities had exclusionary racial covenants prohibiting ownership or rental by Black Americans.
This community was decimated by the construction of i-35 which demolished over 50 square blocks of the neighborhood and split it in half. Predictable economic stressors and disinvestment followed. These realities persist to this day along overbuilt and harmful urban highways and prevent non-automotive transportation from being a realistic option for so many.

The Soul of the Southside festival is a reminder that the descendants of these communities are still here, and are still giving back far more to our shared heritage than they receive in return.

If you are unfamiliar with these events, we encourage you to look into the great resources that exist through organizations like ReConnect Rondo, Our Streets and the Minnesota Historical Society Minnesota Historical Society

And if you're free this evening, swing past the intersection of Lake Street and Minnehaha Ave for some delicious food, beautiful art and home goods, and wonderful live music.

We hope to see you here!

We have received a few questions and concerns on this topic, so we want to reiterate:

We have no affiliation with the St Paul Classic bike ride, the owner of the St Paul Classic does not speak for the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota or the advocates of the Saint Paul Bicycle Coalition. We parted ways with this event in 2023. That event no longer supports the mission of making Minnesota a better place to bike, walk, or roll.

We hope you and your family and friends will join us on the Twin Cities Bike Tour, Oct 10th. It is a celebration of the most bikeable metro in the nation and the forward thinking infrastructure that has made it so!

The Twin Cities Bike Tour is an annual autumn bike ride tradition with routes around the Twin Cities Minnesota metro area.
