Please join WVANA in celebrating April 7 as World Health Day!

This year’s topic is “Stand with Science.” Before anesthesia, surgery meant unimaginable pain. Science transformed it into something you can safely sleep through. Celebrate the power of scientific collaboration to protect health.

Today, March 8, is International Women's Day. This year’s theme is “Give to Gain.” Imagine a gender-equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women's equality.

WVANA joins in this global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

We would like to recognize women as the first anesthesia experts who enabled surgeons to provide all-new manners of care for patients. Their efforts paved the way for the surgical, obstetrical and trauma care that is standard today. Women are also founders of the AANA and the first anesthesia providers for U.S. military personnel during WWI. They remain a fixture in U.S. military and veterans’ healthcare to this day.

Today's CRNAs are doctorate-prepared and deliver care to patients of all ages, work in every type of healthcare setting where anesthesia is required, and specialize in every technique for delivering anesthesia and analgesia.

Big shout-out to one of our own! CRNA Karen Yocum was recently at a sporting event when she witnessed a person collapse. Jumping into action, she managed the person in distress's airway while two or three other ladies immediately began high-quality chest compressions. After approximately ten minutes of lifesaving CPR, EMS arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital, where he received treatment and was discharged. To Karen, she was simply doing what CRNAs do, managing an airway. She says the ladies who performed chest compressions are the true heroes. To that victim, his family, and those of us who heard his story (which he and his family told with great vigor), she is a part of a wonderful group of ladies who gave him the greatest gift one can receive: his life.
