Ever wonder how monarch caterpillars transform into their chrysalis? Each photo is one hour apart. It takes approximately 10-14 days until they emerge as butterflies. Planting milkweed is a great way to attract more butterflies!

We’re growing food for our local pantry this year! So far we’ve donated radishes, beets, carrots, broccoli. Next up more broccoli and basil 🥦 If you have extra produce your families can’t use, drop off at the Worthington Resource Pantry. Have them weigh your donation and email Marc so we can track our kindness in pounds ❤️

OIt's tick season here in Ohio!

Ohio is home to three common tick species: American dog ticks, black-legged (deer) ticks, and lone star ticks. Black-legged and lone star ticks can carry diseases that affect people, so it’s important to take precautions any time you’re hiking, hunting, or spending time outside.

Help prevent tick bites by:
• Wearing long pants and tucking them into your socks or boots
• Using a permethrin-treated repellent on clothing and boots
• Checking yourself, your family, and your pets for ticks after spending time outdoors
• Removing ticks promptly with fine-tipped tweezers

If you find a tick and aren’t sure what it is, you can submit it to your local health department for identification.
Remember, deer are not harmed by Lyme disease, and Lyme disease cannot be spread by eating venison. However, hunters should be especially careful when dressing deer, as ticks may still be present.
A few simple precautions can help you enjoy Ohio’s outdoors while reducing your risk of tick bites.

Location: By old Laundry Building (by dumpsters in parking lot near UniPrint), 2560 Kenny Road

Instructions: Pots must be free of soil, brushed out and stacked neatly inside the recycling carts lined with orange bags for easy collection. Empty any soil in the nearby green compost toters.

Please bring only plastic items for recycling. At this time, we cannot accept pots made from peat, pulp, or other biodegradable materials.

Please Note: The drop-off site will not be staffed.

A Prairie Birthday

When Metro Parks Assistant Resource Manager Elaine Hall was a naturalist, one of her favorite programs to lead in July was a prairie walk. At the beginning of the program she would set the tone with a passage titled Prairie Birthday from A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold.

"...this yard-square relic of original Wisconsin gives birth, each July, to a man-high stalk of compass plant or cutleaf Silphium, spangled with saucer-sized yellow blooms resembling sunflowers. It is the sole remnant in the western half of our county. What a thousand acres of Silphiums looked like when they tickled the bellies of the buffalo is a question never again to be answered, and perhaps not even asked.”

Metro Parks has been dedicated to answering this question since the 1970s, when Jack McDowell created our first reconstructed prairie. Since then, more than 1,500 acres of native prairie has been restored, and the bison have been reintroduced.

As our nation celebrates its 250th birthday, celebrate our deeply important prairies along with it.
