Last week, Water World was forced to close after glass was discovered in the pool. Earlier this spring, we experienced a similar incident in the YMCA Indoor Pool.

Following these incidents, the Worthington Area YMCA and Water World have implemented a new policy prohibiting face-mask style swim goggles in our aquatic facilities.

This decision was made to help reduce the risk of glass entering our pools, improve lifeguard emergency response capabilities, and ensure quick access to a swimmer's airway during rescues and CPR.

We've partnered with WGTN-TV3 to create a short video explaining the reasons behind this policy and the importance of keeping glass out of aquatic facilities.

Due to staffing needs and the Regatta festivities taking place in town, Water World will be operating adjusted hours this weekend. We encourage everyone to get out and enjoy all the great events happening around the community while still making time for a swim! 🌧️ Due to cold temperatures and rainy weather conditions, Water World will be closed for the day on June 11, 2026.

The Indoor Pool will be open from 2-4pm for Open Swim.

We will keep you updated about a reopening date after following standard cleaning and water treatment protocols.
The YMCA indoor pools hours have been adjusted for today to swim using Waterworld passes.

Following two recent incidents involving glass found in our aquatic facilities—one at Water World last week and another in the Indoor Pool earlier this spring—the Worthington YMCA and Worthington Water World are implementing a new aquatic safety policy.

Effective immediately, face-mask style swim goggles (swim masks) will no longer be permitted in our facilities.

This decision was made after reviewing multiple aquatic safety concerns, including:

• Obstructing access to a swimmer’s face and airway during rescues, CPR, and other emergency situations.

• The potential for glass or tempered-glass components to shatter, creating hazards for swimmers, staff, and pool equipment.

• Making it more difficult for lifeguards to quickly recognize signs of distress and respond during an emergency.

• Challenges in distinguishing between masks made with plastic lenses and those containing glass, making consistent enforcement difficult.

While not every swim mask contains glass, staff cannot reliably determine lens materials from a distance. A consistent policy helps eliminate uncertainty and improves safety for all patrons.

Standard swim goggles that cover only the eyes and are made with shatter-resistant plastic lenses remain permitted.

🌊 Water World Reopens This Weekend! 🌊

After our temporary closure due to glass found in the pool, we’re happy to share that cleanup has been completed, the pool has been refilled, and Water World will reopen on Saturday, June 6!

The water may be a little cooler than usual this weekend as our heaters work to bring temperatures back up following the refill.

Thank you for your patience, support, and understanding. We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone back!

🚨 Water World Closure Notice 🚨

For the safety of our guests, Water World is closed until further notice due to glass being found in the pool.

Glass in a swimming pool is a major safety concern. Even a small piece can be difficult to see underwater and has the potential to cause serious injuries to swimmers and staff.

We would also like to remind all parents and guests to please check your goggles before entering the facility. While many goggles are made from plastic, some can contain glass components that may break and create a dangerous situation.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to make Water World safe for everyone. Updates regarding reopening will be shared as soon as they become available.
