Important Update from The Crystal Heart Foundation

It’s with a heavy heart that I share some important news about The Crystal Heart Foundation and our annual races.

Since founding the organization in 2018 in memory of my sister, The Crystal Heart Foundation has been able to contribute over $8,000 directly to Cloud Peak Counseling for their free walk-in clinic and the new Lighthouse Crisis Center in Worland, focused on su***de prevention. We could not have done so without the continued support from generous sponsors such as Rocky Mountain Power, Wyoming Gas, Washakie Hospital Foundation and many others.
Thanks to our amazing participants and the generous matches from Blue Cross Blue Shield through WyoGives, we’ve raised an additional $4,000—making an incredible impact right here in our community.

Over the years, our 5K, half marathon, and, most recently, the ultramarathon have grown beyond what I could have ever imagined. Your support, enthusiasm, and heart have been overwhelming — and it’s been my privilege to organize these events as a labor of love.

However, behind the scenes, it has largely been a one-woman operation, supported only by the unwavering kindness of my close friends, family, and a small handful of volunteers. As the race has grown, so have the demands — and despite the incredible enthusiasm from our runners, we’ve struggled year after year to find enough hands to keep up.

At the same time, my own children are growing up fast, and these days, weekends are filled with soccer games, softball tournaments, and memories that I can’t afford to miss. These moments are fleeting, and after much thought — and a lot of heartbreak — I have made the very difficult decision to cancel our race for this year and for the foreseeable future.

This decision was not made lightly. The Crystal Heart Foundation and our mission will always hold a special place in my heart.
If there’s someone out there who feels called to take over the foundation and continue this mission, I would happily hand over the reins and offer my full support during the transition.

Thank you all — from the bottom of my heart — for every step you've run, every dollar you've donated, and every word of encouragement you've shared.
You have made a difference. You have honored my sister's memory. And you have shown the best of what a community can be.

With gratitude,
Nikki Donahue

What an amazing event today at The Mental Fitness Fair at the Worland Community Center!! So many resources available for the support of individuals with mental health challenges and so many people who care! It makes us proud to be a part of this great community.

We shared our story, information about why movement is medicine and mountains are therapy, and easy stretches that immediately provide mental health benefits. We got a few volunteers signed up and some interest in participating in the 6th Annual Out of the Darkness and Into the Bighorns Events!!

I am so proud of our Freshman Girls at WHS!! Our Freshman Girls Basketball team ended their season with an incredible winning streak, showing their hard work off with noticeable improvement in every girl! They beat teams like Cody, Lander and Buffalo with a 6 girl team.

Our Freshman Girls had a mighty presence on our Wrestling team this year, with Leona, Cerenity and Hailey all making it to State! And Cerenity Quintana-Fabela wrestled a gritty match and pinned her opponent for a 5th place podium at State!!

My favorite little runner, Ava Tapia took home some brass from State Cross Country and I am missing too many other amazing student athletes to name here!

Way to go, ladies!! Worland, watch this group of girls coming up, they are doing amazing things!! We're all having a blast watching you! ❤️💖✨

And of course, Congratulations to Senior, Rivers Carrell, for her State Championship!! 🏆

Go Warriors!!

Our Story

Crystal Heart Foundation is a legacy for my sister. It has been almost 12 years ago since she took her own life. I know that I echo the same words as many others left behind when I say that we never thought in a million years that Crystal would commit su***de. Mental illness is something that is not always tangible to us, it can be taboo and hard to talk about. I know that there are many others left behind that have the same questions after losing a loved one to su***de. We are left wondering if we could have done more. After over a decade, I am finally in a place that I feel I have healed well enough to start taking the steps to make a difference in su***de rates through contributing to community mental health care programs.

I see small community health centers in Wyoming supporting and employing residents that would typically struggle or fail to find employment through various programs that they are struggling to keep running on shortening state budgets. My goal is to raise funds to contribute to these supported employment programs and crisis centers through competitive events that might also help to encourage development of a healthy lifestyle and mindset for residents affected by mental illness.
