Some of the strongest leaders in this work aren’t the ones with the longest résumés, they’re the ones who have been there. The ones who know what it feels like to start over, to rebuild, to fight for stability, or to navigate systems that weren’t built with them in mind.

At Homeward Bound, we’re proud to have staff whose lived experience isn’t just part of their story, it’s part of their strength.

They show up in the trenches with a kind of empathy you can’t teach.

Being homeless while part of the LGBTQ+ community means carrying more than the weight of finding a safe place to sleep. It can mean carrying the fear of not being accepted, the exhaustion of hiding parts of yourself, or the ache of being turned away by the very people who were supposed to love you first.

But it also means carrying courage.

Courage to keep showing up.
Courage to seek safety and stability.
Courage to be fully yourself in a world that doesn’t always make room for that.

At Homeward Bound, we honor that courage.

Fill the Need Friday: Help Us Keep Nutritious Meals on the Table

Every day at Homeward Bound, meals do more than feed hunger, they restore dignity, offer comfort, and remind our neighbors that they are not facing their hardest days alone.

A warm, nutritious meal can be the turning point in someone’s day.
For some, it’s the first real meal they’ve had in days.
For others, it’s a moment of calm in the middle of uncertainty.
For every guest, it’s a reminder that they matter.

Today, we’re celebrating the volunteers who keep Homeward Bound moving, the ones who show up, step in, and make sure our guests experience dignity in every corner of this shelter.

Some prepare meals with care.
Some wash load after load of laundry so every guest has clean bedding.
Some sweep, scrub, organize, and repair the spaces we rely on every day.
Some do a little bit of everything.

All of them make a difference.

What they give isn’t just time, it’s compassion, steadiness, and the belief that everyone deserves a safe, welcoming place to land. Our volunteers are the heartbeat of this work, and we’re grateful for every single one of them.
