With Woodstock PrideFest this weekend, we are Artfully Encountering the “Love is Love” staircase between Benton Street on the Square and Jefferson Street. The vibrant rainbow staircase is based on the Pride flag, which is used as a symbol of LGBTQ pride, social movements, peace, identity, and support from allies. The pride flag is displayed horizontally with the red stripe on top, followed by orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The rainbow flag was first introduced in San Francisco in 1978 and is now identifiable worldwide. Woodstock Pride!

Today's Artful Encounter is a statue of actor and director Orson Welles displayed on the pedway between the mural and the theater. It is a 2018 bronze depicting Orson seated in a chair, created by Bobby Joe Scribner, who also made the new "Whorled" roundabout sculpture. Orson Welles lived here in Woodstock at the Todd School for Boys during his childhood and later spoke fondly of our town!

Another Artful Encounter, this time at the McHenry County Courthouse on Route 47, and it’s worth going through Security to see it! Titled “County Flair,” it’s an oil on canvas 5 'x 20 ' masterpiece completed in 2007 by McHenry County College students for the McHenry County Government’s permanent art collection. It features iconic images from all around McHenry County. How many elements can you identify?

Our next Artful Encounter is a fun one that can be found at 319 Calhoun Street at the home of Brent and Karen White. It is a privately owned artwork that can be seen publicly. It is an exterior sculpture of a large tortoise that was carved from a tree stump. He is absolutely adorable, and his name is Humphrey! He is viewable from the street, and if you see Brent or Karen working in their yard, stop and visit, as they are happy to talk about Humphrey!

We're going to start a series called "Artful Encounters" that will highlight Woodstock's Public Art that you can encounter at your convenience!

Our first Artful Encounter is the Main Street Pedway near Classic Cinemas Woodstock Theatre to view the 100+ foot-long mural, "Woodstock on Film and on the Stage."

It features Woodstock's cultural legends, including:
Dick Tracy comic strip creator Chester Gould, who lived in Woodstock for 50 years.

Woodstock Opera House "Woodstock Players" summer stock acting troupe that included future legends Paul Newman, Tom Bosley, Shelley Berman, Geraldine Page, Lois Nettleton, and Betsy Palmer.

Director and actor Orson Welles, who attended Todd School in Woodstock from ages 11 to 16. He first directed and acted in plays at the Woodstock Opera House.

The film site of Bill Murray's classic Groundhog Day hit movie in 1993.

The mural and its theme were suggested by R.B. Thompson, designed by Michael Stanard, and painted by Mark Adamany.

While you are welcome to view the mural at any time, we've included images here that show the creation process. Enjoy!
