Water You Up To?June 26, 2026
Did you notice our new look? Our report got a summer makeover. You’ll see more updates, more data, more river conditions, and yes, more shenanigans. Because keeping up with the river shouldn’t be boring.
A big thank you to our new presenting sponsor, Animal Hospital Supply, for making these weekly updates possible. And thanks to the Reservoir Center for Water Solutions and Xylem, we’re adding real time river data from our new monitoring station in Woodstock.
We are so nerding out over here.
🟢 Recreation
The North Fork is looking okay for the weekend. Water levels are hanging in there, the water is refreshing, and most of the river has low E. coli levels.
Except for Meems.
It came in well above the EPA’s recommended swimming threshold this week. We’d choose another access point, keep your head above water, avoid open cuts, and please, for the love of all things gut, don’t drink the river water.
🟡 River Health
Summer is settling in. Water temperatures are climbing, the river is still running low, and we’ve received a few reports of possible harmful algae blooms. Nothing has been confirmed, and our new river monitor is showing healthy readings, so that’s good news.
The drought, though? It’s still hanging around.
🔴 Drought
Still the biggest story on the river.
Virginia is now entirely in drought, groundwater remains in Emergency status, and January through May was the 7th driest start to the year on record. State officials are asking everyone to conserve water now to help avoid tougher restrictions later if conditions continue to worsen.
