Happy Shark Week! 🦈🤖
One of the coolest parts of my career has been building the technology that lets us study sharks without ever putting a diver in the water with them. I co-invented the REMUS SharkCam — an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) designed to track and swim alongside great white sharks, filming natural hunting and social behavior for the very first time. That research became the backbone of 7 shows across Discovery Channel and National Geographic.
Cape Cod, right in our backyard, is one of the best natural laboratories for this kind of work — the shallow shoals off Monomoy and the outer beaches draw one of the largest seasonal white shark populations on the East Coast, following the recovering gray seal population.
Robots like SharkCam are changing what we know about these animals — and how we protect them.

You’ve followed because you love what underwater cameras reveal — the behavior, the biology, the sheer strangeness of what lives below the surface. TurtleCam. SharkCam. The footage that reminds us how little we actually know about the ocean we share.

There’s a nonprofit on Cape Cod called Our Blue Horizons that is teaching kids to do exactly this work. Their flagship program — Project SHARK: Students Harnessing Awareness, Research and Knowledge — puts students on the water, in the field, and behind the controls of ROVs they build themselves. Marine conservation fieldwork. Ocean skills in real conditions. The same curiosity that drives everything we do here, instilled deliberately in the next generation of marine scientists.

I’m proud to help amplify their work over the next several weeks. If you’ve ever been moved by what a camera under the water can reveal — imagine what it does to a 14-year-old who built the camera and drove it themselves.
