Project Search: HYMC

Project Search: HYMC Project SEARCH is a internship program for young adults with disabilities to gain work experience to help them achieve employment in their communities.

Project SEARCH combines classroom time with a year-long unpaid internship at Howard Young Medical Center/Ascension in Woodruff. This combination of instruction and immersion in a professional workplace setting prepares interns to enter the workforce in their communities. Interns complete three rotations throughout the year based on their skill set, abilities, and vocational interest. At HYMC, inte

rns will learn how to perform internship tasks independently, how to display appropriate behavior in the workplace, and will improve their communication & social skills. The goal of Project SEARCH is for each and every intern to gain competitive employment in the community after graduation. Competitive employment can be defined as jobs that offer 16 or more hours per week, and pays at least minimum wage. The program is a collaboration between Ascension, Lakeland Union High School, Rhinelander, Eagle River, and Tomahawk School Districts, Wisconsin Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, TMG IRIS, TMG MILC, Lakeland Care, and Inclusa agencies.

So many changes for our Project SEARCH program. Ascension is leaving the area and will not be affiliated with Howard Young Medical Center any longer. In honor of their initial and continued support for the program, interns from all 4 years were contacted and asked to share their thoughts. This video was shown at this year's graduation. A thank you to former President Sandy Anderson who had the vision to bring the program to the north. A thank you to Kathy Viergutz, our first Business Liaison who worked so hard to develop rotation sites for us. Thank you Chief Administrator, Laurie Oungst for continued support and Lori Butkus our current Business Liaison, along with the rest of the wonderful Howard Young Medical Center staff!

At long last, the interns were allowed back in Howard Young Medical Center to finish out their year. Following PPE protocols, they are learning a variety of skills in different departments. Our classroom remains off-site, but close by so during warm spring days we are able to walk over. Preparations for finding their dream jobs are underway with the completion of resumes, cover letters and references.

We are so fortunate to have the support of four amazing businesses: Trig's of Minocqua, Quality Inn, Tone Zone and Walgreens. The first and second rotations were very successful due to the staff at these locations welcoming the interns and working with them as coworkers.
