Garrett Mitchell posted the following thoughts concerning the passing of our longtime member of our chain crew, Mack Lancaster.
Garrett said, “I've had to say goodbye to too many friends. We lost another good friend and good man on Sunday.
Mack Lancaster served proudly on the Woodruff Wolverine "Chain Gang" for 50 years from 1971-2020. I was privileged to work with him on our chain crew for the last 20 of his years. Even after he retired, Mack was always on standby and worked a few more games with us when we needed a hand. This past August, he asked if he could work the Fountain Inn game with us because he missed doing it. Heck yea, he could! We would never say no to Mr. Mack.
But the deeper truth is, Mack was a man that stood for integrity and kindness. He held our chain crew to a high standard of professionalism and expected us to do the job and do it with respect to our guests who we shared the visiting sideline with. It is a mantra we still practice and take pride in. I worked my first game on the crew as an 18 year old fill in as a high school senior. Mack and I hit it off immediately and he gave his blessing for me to join the crew full time the next season in 2003. I have been on the sideline every Friday night since then.
We all shared some wonderful memories together, and witnessed some amazing games, including beating Strom Thurmond in the 2011 upper-state championship. Mack worked state title games at Varner Stadium in the 70s and 80s and witnessed our Wolverines build its immortal dynasty.
Most importantly, Mack was a man of God and a Christlike example for all to follow. I know he experienced his biggest victory on Sunday morning when those gates opened with the words "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
We will miss you, Mack, but I promise we will keep the chains tight. Rest well, my friend.

Our condolences to Mack’s friends and loved ones. He made a major contribution to our Wolverine Nation through the years! He will certainly be missed!!
