If you haven’t gotten a chance to join us for Sunset Friday tomorrow is your next chance! We keep the Cache Creek Nature Preserve open till sunset on the second Friday of every month to give you the opportunity to photograph evening wildlife, hike after work, watch the sunset with your favorite person, listen to the red-wing blackbirds sing good-night, or however you prefer to enjoy the Nature Preserve! With a forecasted high of only 82° tomorrow, it’s sure to be a beautiful, cool evening.

Looking for an internship for the new school year? Cache Creek Conservancy is opening applications for our fall term Ecological and Environmental Internship program via our website! Interns participate in fieldworks and learn about restoration techniques, local floral and faunal ID, and data management. Applications are due August 22nd!

Tomorrow is the first Sunday of the month which is our monthly Volunteer Day! This month we are starting a little earlier to beat the heat ☀️ No need to register, just pack your gloves, water bottle and sunscreen and drop in to the Cache Creek Nature Preserve bright and early Sunday morning.

The 2026 CCNP Nest Box season has officially wrapped! We want to extend a big thank you to all the staff, interns and volunteers who helped record data and count eggs and baby birds, all while enduring the increasing heat and wasps! ☀️🪺 Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for the full report on our website, and in the meantime here are the quick stats:
- 2026’s best box monitoring season lasted 20 weeks, from early March to late July
- Out of 15 songbird nest boxes, all 15 were utilized and 14 were re-nested (experienced a second clutch). 29 nests total.
- There was a grand total of 158 eggs laid, 141 eggs hatched, and 135 nestlings successfully fledged. That’s an 89% hatch rate and 95% fledging rate!
- Our most dominant nest box users were tree swallows. 25 tree swallow nests, 3 western bluebird nests, and 1 ash-throated flycatcher nest.
- On average, each nest produced 5.45 eggs. The smallest clutch was 4 eggs and the largest clutch was 7 eggs.

A big THANK YOU to for building and donating 15 new songbird nest boxes to us. We are confident the birds will get some great use out of them in the future! 🐣🏠

 
Bird nest boxes provide valuable habitat for nesting birds and their offspring, while also serving as a monitoring tool to see what bird species are successfully breeding in the area. The most common species of songbirds that use our nest boxes are tree swallow, western bluebird, and ash-throated flycatcher. These species depend on cavities to build their nests, but they are not capable of making their own cavities. Instead, they must find naturally-occurring tree cavities, old woodpecker holes, or nest boxes.

Here’s what’s happening:

🧘 8:00 AM – Yoga Under the Oaks

Start your morning with mindfulness. Find your flow, breathe in the fresh air, and stretch beneath our beautiful canopy of oak trees. All levels are welcome!

🌿 9:00 AM – Volunteer Day

Love the preserve? Help us keep it beautiful! Join our team for a morning of community-driven conservation work. It’s a great way to get your hands dirty and make a real difference.

Come for the yoga, stay for the volunteering, or just drop by to enjoy the trails!
