Apple Growing Tips for Yolo County — Zone 9b

Choose the right varieties: Low- to moderate-chill apples such as Anna, Dorsett Golden, Gala, Fuji, and Pink Lady can perform well.
Plant in full sun with well-drained soil.
Provide a pollinizer: Plant compatible varieties that bloom at the same time.
Water deeply and regularly during Yolo County’s hot, dry summers.
Prune while dormant to maintain an open, manageable canopy.
Thin fruit early for larger, healthier apples.
Monitor for codling moth and fire blight, common apple problems in the Central Valley.

October Gardening Tips — Yolo County Zone 9b

Plant: Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, lettuce, spinach, carrots, beets, radishes, peas, onions and garlic.

Plant herbs: Cilantro, parsley, chives and dill thrive in cooler weather.

Plant bulbs and perennials: Get spring-flowering bulbs, California natives and perennials established now.

Plant trees and shrubs: Fall is an excellent time for planting while temperatures are cooler.

Clean up: Remove spent summer crops and diseased plants. Leave some healthy stems and seed heads for beneficial insects.

Mulch: Add 2–4 inches of compost or organic mulch to conserve moisture and protect soil.

Adjust irrigation: Reduce watering as temperatures cool, while keeping new plantings adequately watered.

Watch for pests: Cooler, wetter weather can bring increased slug and snail activity.

Save leaves: Shredded leaves make excellent mulch and compost material.

*Bring your questions about pests, fertilizing, irrigation, and other gardening issues to the store at 2250 Lake Washington Boulevard, West Sacramento.

On Zoom: https://ucanr.zoom.us/j/98028723763. Kitchen Garden Chat meets monthly and provides tips for the edible garden. All about planting garlic. How to harvest, cure and store winter squash. In addition to providing information on general edible garden care for the month.

New and experienced gardeners alike are welcome to join Treva for her Kitchen Garden Chats, which meet at 10 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month.

*Each month, Treva takes a science-based approach to what kitchen gardeners should be planting, what they should be harvesting, what pests they should expect and how to deal with them, and what chores should be on their gardening to-do lists. Questions about edibles are welcome and encouraged!

*Treva, a master gardener in Yolo County for 30 years, has been leading Kitchen Garden Chats since 2019. A retired veterinarian, she lives on a small, 20-acre farm in Woodland.
