Common Diseases of Fruit and Landscape Trees and How to Manage Them
August 27 at 3 pm on Zoom

Spots, wilting, dieback, or unusual growth don't always mean a plant has a disease. Join Dr. Akif Eskalen, Professor of Cooperative Extension in Plant Pathology, for a practical, science-based look at diagnosing tree health problems.

Learn how to:

Tell the difference between disease and environmental or cultural stress
Examine plants and collect useful samples
Use simple magnification tools to investigate symptoms
Apply prevention, sanitation, irrigation management, and integrated pest management

Great for Master Gardeners and anyone who wants to avoid misdiagnosis and unnecessary pesticide use. Join us via Zoom: https://yolocounty.zoom.us/j/83058654815

My favorite garden to relax in is the Ruth Risdon Storer Garden in the UC Davis Arboretum. It's located right next to the gazebo. Within the garden, there is a wonderfully decorated restroom with ceramic tiles created by students and the public. You have to see it to believe it. The Ruth Risdon Storer Garden is a great place any time of year. Make it a rest stop on your next visit. 📸photos by Jennifer Baumbach

Panning over the Four O’Clocks, you’ll notice these interesting half-moon cutouts in the leaves. What’s causing this? It’s a beneficial called the Leafcutter Bee. They use the cut portion of the leaves to create a sort of sleeping bag to protect their egg. Isn’t nature amazing?!

August Garden Tips

Summer's been mild so far, but be ready for late-season heat and wind. Work in the early mornings, stay hydrated, and save afternoons for shade—or a good book.

August is also prime time for fall planning. As zinnias, sunflowers, and summer veggies still shine, start sketching changes for your garden, measuring spaces, and tackling projects one piece at a time.

Ornamentals & Annuals: Keep deadheading and deep-watering for blooms into fall—even Thanksgiving roses aren't unusual with a fertilizer feed now. Group container pots together to ease watering and boost humidity.

Pests & Beneficials: Tattered sunflower leaves are likely from finches snacking on aphids—a fair trade. Keep water sources fresh for birds (they love a sprinkler) and bees (a shallow dish with stones works well).

Bulbs: Browse catalogues for additions like native Ithuriel's Spear or ornamental alliums.

Fruit: Fertilize berry canes and prune apricot and cherry trees now (not in winter, to avoid fungal disease). Clean up fallen fruit to keep pests and disease at bay.

Kitchen Garden Chat: Summer Fruit Tree Pruning. August 1, 2026 from 10:00am to 11:00am. Venue: via zoom

New and experienced gardeners alike are welcome to join UC Master Gardener of Yolo County Treva Valentine to chat about summer fruit tree pruning especially apricot and cherry and starting the winter garden. Each month, Treva takes a science-based approach to what kitchen gardeners should be planting, what they should be harvesting, what pests they should expect and how to deal with them, and what chores should be on their gardening to-do lists. Questions about edibles are welcome and encouraged!

Treva, a master gardener in Yolo County for 30 years, has been leading Kitchen Garden Chats since 2019. A retired veterinarian, she lives on a small, 20-acre farm in Woodland, California.

Composting with Worms. Webinar on Zoom.
July 23, 2026 from 3:00pm to 4:00pm.

Please join UC Master Gardener of Yolo County Janet Arias, to discuss using worms to recycle your food scraps into nutrient-rich worm castings, the “gold standard” of soil amendments. Learn how to set up and maintain a worm bin, and to harvest and use the castings in your garden. This is fun for kids, but it’s also great for gardeners who want to give their plants an extra boost.
