As we wrap up what has been, well, if I'm being honest, less than successful Colorado Gives Campaign, I'd like to highlight one more intern. Saved the tallest for last. Here is what Owen had to say about being a KOH graduate and RMA intern:

Hello! My name is Owen Purvis and I was fortunate enough to serve as an RMA mentor/intern for a month in 2024. I graduated from the original KOH camp in 2023 and wanted to give back in any way I could. When Steve reached out to me giving me the opportunity, I immediately said yes. To say the least, that month changed my life. The kids I met, the relationships I formed, the memories I made, the skills I learned, are still valuable to this day. There isn’t a day that goes by when I don’t reminisce about that month. Being a role model to these kids ended up turning me into a better man myself. I learned what it means to be a leader but most importantly, learned how properly mentor kids, push them out of their comfort zone, and bring them happiness, even in difficult times. Your generous donation truly brings life into these kids eyes and allows them to participate in activities they otherwise would never be able to do. Thank you!

To me, being an intern at RMA means helping underserved youth discover their own value and potential through the outdoors. It’s about offering positive guidance, building life skills, and encouraging kids to challenge themselves in ways they may never have had the chance to before. Watching them grow in nature was the most meaningful part of the work, and it’s an honor to be a part of this journey.

Knights of Heroes and Rocky Mountain Ascent compliment each other in a truly magical way. When our campers graduate from KOH, they want to give back. That is where the RMA internship program comes in. Over the past 5 years, more than 20 KOH graduates have taken part in paid (thank you Gary Sinise Foundation) internships with RMA. I'd like to share some testimonials from some of our interns. Starting with Miranda:

"KOH & RMA have enlightened and changed my life. Since I was about 13, I’ve been a mentee/ camper because my dad, who served in the Army & Air Force, passed away. Losing my mom as well has been painful but in a way feels full circle that I have been an intern and staff ! I find being a part of RMA’s mission of building resilience in children’s lives to be critical. My brother and I wouldn’t be who we are today without the helping hands, communities, and mentorship involved in my camps. I feel beyond blessed to have opportunities to come out time and time again, and I only want more people to experience it!"

We are 5 days into the Colorado Gives campaign and we are at 4% of our goal of raising $25,000. Please take 30 seconds and watch this video. These kids are living in group homes,foster care or in some cases homeless shelters. For some of them, their first real experience with nature comes at an RMA event. Around 200 kids attended RMA camps this summer! These programs are free of charge thanks to our incredible donors! November marks the first day of “Colorado Gives”. This is a state-wide fundraising campaign that goes through 9 December.

RMA has set a goal of raising $25,000. Fundraising for RMA is more challenging than it was with KOH. We love a challenge! That’s at the heart of KOH and RMA. Crushing challenges. The more difficult the better!

Hello to all of our Knights of Heroes friends. After four years, we figured out how to get back onto our page.

In the mean time, KOH hosted its final summer camp in July of 2025. It was an amazing, yet bitter sweet event. The KOH mission is complete and we have now completed a four-year transition to our new mission under the name Rocky Mountain Ascent.

Please take a few minutes and visit the RMA website, learn about the mission and read some testimonials. Tanner, Liz, Cedar and their amazing volunteers are changing lives! They are serving a truly underserved community.
