On July 29, the Assyrian Studies Association hosted a conversation between Dr. Arbella Bet-Shlimon and Dr. Mariam Georgis, moderated by Dr. Nahrain Bet Younadam.

The discussion took up the challenges and urgency of critiquing dominant modes of scholarly inquiry about Assyrians, in light of Dr. Bet-Shlimon's recent article, "'Propaganda of the Victims': Atrocity Denial, Ethnic Nationalism, and the Disparagement of Assyrians in Middle East Studies," published this year in the Review of Middle East Studies.

Meet our speaker, Dr. Arbella Bet-Shlimon, Associate Professor of History at the University of Washington and author of "City of Black Gold: Oil, Ethnicity, and the Making of Modern Kirkuk", who will join the Assyrian Studies Association for a conversation with Dr. Mariam Georgis.

Together they examine the challenges and urgency of critiquing dominant modes of scholarly inquiry about Assyrians, drawing on Dr. Bet-Shlimon's recent article, "'Propaganda of the Victims': Atrocity Denial, Ethnic Nationalism, and the Disparagement of Assyrians in Middle East Studies," in Review of Middle East Studies.
