A bill requiring school districts to implement s*xual abuse education seemed poised to become law during the recent Alaska Legislature. Governor Sean Parnell supported Erin’s Law, the Senate passed it, and the House version had 21 co-sponsors.

I know we all want to believe differently. But the reality is, the world IS a different place than we grew up in, and it begs the question: "do we expose our kids to dangerous situations, simply by trying to teach or give them independence?" This precious girl should have had an es**rt. A parent, a buddy at the very least, someone to lessen the chances of being picked up by a predator. Indeed, they are among us, as coaches, janitors, professionals, doctors, and _______ (fill in the blank). Statistics show that most abductions occur when a child, tween, teen, or adult is alone. Please teach your children to always choose a buddy or don't go!

Talking sheds light to the atrocity, shame, & truth of child s*xual abuse. It's easy to perceive that CSA doesn't effect us, or isn't really "our" issue. But I'm here to tell you that someone you know struggles with their todays because of their past CSA experience(s), and the more we realize that we are all part of the solutions, the more open we can be to those that need our acknowledgement, light, awareness, & education. CSA grows in the dark, like poison. The world needs you and I to be educated and talk about this silent epidemic, even if it's just to nurture one victim or protect one child. We all matter.

Profoundly sad. But a good opportunity to underscore the understanding that "tricky people" come in all shapes, sizes, from all back grounds, and all degrees of success. Please discuss with your family and especially your children that looking or being successful has nothing to do with whether or not someone is a safe grown up.

Hi parents, just a loving reminder that this is a good time to remind your children (and ourselves) that they get to choose how to show affection towards friends and family. We should be honoring their ownership of their bodies by not insisting they kiss or hug someone. Allowing it to be their choice underscores our beliefs that they are in control of who touches them. xo

For many, this will rattle you. This is where my story began. While this is certainly a newsworthy piece, lets not lose sight of the fact that there are tens of thousands of potential, current, & unprosecuted predators and pe*****les breathing a sigh of relief because everyone is focusing their attention on Jack. See, the mission of most of these guys is to fly under the radar, unnoticed, on the sly. If we're busy protecting our kids from the guy everyone else is watching, this decision can leave our kids vulnerable to those who aren't making noise or "seeming" threatening. The best thing you can do is empower your kids with tools and teach them how to protect themselves. Anyone can be a tricky person..........not just the guy on the news.

We here at POMWA have always encouraged our grown ups to teach kids the real and accurate name for their body parts! If they own it, how can that possibly be s*x education. Teach them young! Take a few moments to read this great article. Worth your time!
